Video, camera functionality coming to BlackBerries

Fighting for market share, an executive with RIM says upcoming BlackBerry devices will finally incorporate streaming video, a camera and integration with sites like Flickr. Hey, now all of us middle-aged executives will enjoy the same perks as our teenage daughters, while still being tied to the office around the clock.

Intel says ‘we’re content delivery competitors’

Interesting thought from Intel VP and GM Donald McDonald of the Digital Home Group. McDonald was talking about how home media centers will keep moving in as an alternative means of entertainment. “Are we your competitors?” he asked a room of traditional cable system operators. “Absolutely,” was his candid reply. And he’s right. The cable hasn’t been the only pipe into the home for some time. Now with more powerful processors, the PC doesn’t even have to look like a PC anymore and an Intel-based home media center can out-cable cable.

MySpace powering YouTube video plays

MySpace is certainly helping the YouTube effort. MySpace SVP Shawn Gold tells CTAM that 40 percent of YouTube video plays come off of their MySpace pages. It’s not about your site - it’s about the ease of sharing that will boost your video views. Another tidbit: MySpace grows by two million members every day.

MTV CEO tells attendees to ‘evolve or die’

Easier to say for a television brand that has always been synonymous with reinvention and innovation. Judy McGrath also showed CTAM attendees an old MTV promo from the 80s of a roller-skater with a boom box TV on her shoulder blaring MTV. The tagline, “Take MTV to go.” She said, “We always knew our audience would take MTV with them if they could and now they can.” Read about other interesting nuggets and stats from McGrath’s keynote, after the jump…

CBS Digital sees ad gains at upfront

CBS Digital Media prez Larry Kramer says he saw “a huge amount of interest” at the upfront, but he doesn’t have any specific numbers on the internet’s contribution. “I don’t think anybody knows yet how much of what we do is going to be part of the [TV] upfront.” Early predictions speculate as much as 2 percent of revenue would shift from TV to the internet. Starting in August, Logitech will include a link in its webcam software that will allow users to record video directly to Grouper.com. The move will eliminate the time-consuming step of saving and uploading video — a feature that Grouper will promote as the easiest way to post video on the web.

YouTube sued over Denny beating video

In what may be the company’s first lawsuit, YouTube has been sued by Bob Tur, owner of the Los Angeles News Service. Tur is well known in media circles for, well, suing for just about everything when it comes to his precious video of the 1992 LA riots. In this case, the video of the beating of Reginald Denny was posted on YouTube and viewed (gasp!) 1,000 times. Tur alleges that works out to $150,000, and he’s suing under the MGM vs. Grokster umbrella.

Huge leap in online ad spending over 2005

Ad spending rose 5.6 percent in Q1 of 2006 compared with the same quarter of 2005. A good gain - but nothing compared to the gain in ad spending on the internet. Ad spending online in jumped an astonishing 46.4 percent over the first quarter of ‘05. Spanish-language TV was the second-biggest gainer, with a 14.3 percent jump. But online ad buyer beware: click fraud is up, too.

YouTube hits milestone, chats with CBS

Lots of juicy YouTube news today. First, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves sat down with YouTube founder Chad Hurley for a 45-minute meeting at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley. Several reporters witnessed the meeting and said Moonves “marveled” at YouTube’s audience. “He asked how YouTube might be able to direct more traffic to Web sites owned by CBS,” reported AP’s Michael Liedtke. “The meeting ended with Moonves concluding that CBS should start posting daily snippets of its programming on YouTube.” Meanwhile, coincidentally, CBS News President Sean McManus said the network shouldn’t have hit a milestone of 100 million videos served every day. The company says that makes up 60% of all online video traffic. Now you believe that number, YouTube serves up more video online than Hollywood, the networks, cable channels, local TV and the major portals combined. Hey, maybe this user-generated video thing has some legs, eh? (Thanks, Don!)
