Welcome to the new Lost Remote
Cory Bergman July 20th, 2006
I’ve been working on the new design for the last few weeks, and I’m still a couple weeks from finishing it. But when our database decided to kick the bucket yesterday afternoon — freezing us out of publishing — I was forced to slap a redirect on LostRemote.com to the working development site and launch this thing.
I have no idea what caused Movable Type to start spitting out random errors, but I suspect it was a combination of an ancient server, massive archive database and a recent barrage of comment spam. So now you’re looking at Lost Remote built in WordPress and hosted on LaughingSquid (the same guys that host BoingBoing.) So… much… better.
I still have to do a bunch of things — archives, features, design tweaks, domain name, RSS — and I haven’t tested half the stuff on here (hey, it’s 2 am). So please have mercy. The thought of launching a new website for a bunch of web folks is downright terrifying, especially when a technical meltdown forced us to debut it early.
Hope you like it so far, and wish me luck…

Is a surprise. on the plus side it is neat and clean. on the minus side, type choices and absense of bold makes it “feel” weak at birst look. maybe it will take time.

A good surprise, but I think I miss the “bold”

Good job guys. It’s nice, but so far I would say that the new template is more classic and less professional-looking. Nevertheless I will continue to read you everyday from Paris, France (yes I’m French). Keep up the great work !

You know what it could really use? A banner with all of your smiling heads right across the top! ** ducks head ** Kidding!
I’m with the rest of you in thinking that anchor heads are the worst thing about TV web site design.

Why does the URL resolve to nowbreaking.com ?
6. John | July 19th, 2006 at 4:23 am
A friend sent me an Internet about your new site.
Just kidding. Looks good guys, but cue the broken record — could use more bold. Will take some getting used to. I’ll still check it out every day when I don’t feel like editing wire copy!
7. bob | July 19th, 2006 at 4:25 am
Looks great. Screw the bold.
8. Eric | July 19th, 2006 at 4:58 am
Needs more cowbell. I mean bold. Agree with the other comments that it could use a little punch.

Another of my favorite bloggers, Dorynsdish, just lost her entire site and i think she used Movable Type too. I love your site. I used to work at KING too, so I feel strangely connected. Good luck.

The nowbreaking.com URL is temporary. Cory owns it and we were using it for the beta. It should resolve to LR shortly. As Cory mentioned, he had to crash release this. He’s not taking enough credit for how fast he banged this out.
And Eric’s right. I knew we should have used more cowbell.

it’s very clean and professional, but one of the things i liked about the old site was that i didn’t have to scroll much. now it’s one big scroll-fest.
12. Swift Loris | July 19th, 2006 at 6:34 am
Easier to read and much more aesthetically pleasing, but it seems almost *sedate*, colorless, lacking in the exuberant, slightly messy personality the old site had. I don’t get the same shot of adrenaline from it.

Way cool, Cory. What a nice surprise! Very readable indeed.

Where’s your Lost Remote flash video player?
Great job but some bold on the headlines would really help.

hey, the pitch box!
16. e | July 19th, 2006 at 7:37 am
i like it. jarring at first, but definitely cleaner. i agree with the comment above about the scrolling, but yet also feel like the type is smaller.
Overall, good stuff, LR keeps getting better.

Looks good and sharp. Hang in there, and let us know how you like Wordpress… I just jumped in to a big revamp of my own personal site and decided to go with Wordpress… I might be in over my head!

Love the new logo. I’d like to see more visual personality, like the old site had. Readability of smaller font is not as good. I’m sure a lot of this is due to having to smash this site together in an hour and a half. Patience, patience….
I will say that one of the things I liked about LR was that it was a blog that didn’t look like every other blog.
That said, what matters is the content — and that hasn’t changed.

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback. It was literally launch this thing overnight or have nothing the next day. So in a sense, NowBreaking.com is so appropriate.
I will say that there\’s a new design element that I pulled at the last minute because I still have to show all the bloggers how to use it. It will differentiate LR from other blogs and give the site some pop. Plus, we\’ll start posting images again, which will help things. You\’ll see it next week…

…so far…reduced, readable…and very sophisticated
or in two words: like it!
keep up the good work

Well that was a surprise this morning. The design’s clean, easy to read, still a fan of the old logo but this isn’t a democracy. When’s new LR editor Amanda Congdon starting her videoblog?
22. Prof | July 19th, 2006 at 11:45 am
Good job.Looking forward to the added bells and whistles.
23. Chris | July 19th, 2006 at 11:56 am
I actually gasped when I saw the new site design - LOVE IT!
24. Alyssa | July 19th, 2006 at 12:00 pm
I miss the seperate pop-up Comments box. And the bloder look of the old site. This reminds me of so many blogs. I felt your old design stood out more, and appreciated the way the columns were set up.
Will the new Comments format remember my info (name, email, URL) ?
( I only ask, as there is no option to click ‘yes’ or ‘no’)
And I agree, there is no such thing as too much cowbell.

Ya know, maybe I have done too much home remodelling and repairs lately, but the new logo reminds of a J bend trap you’d find under the bathroom sink.
26. me | July 19th, 2006 at 12:26 pm
nice, but it looks like one of the free Wordpress themes out there which makes it look like any other blog now, to me at least.

Looks nice to see a new design… Although I do agree, it needs more bold. But hey guys… Don’t leave me hanging out to the right! I’ve been viewing LR at work on my Windows ME (that’s right) laptop at 800×600, now I have a huge ugly horizontal scrollbar. Condense, condense!
28. Jay | July 19th, 2006 at 4:37 pm
I like what you’re doing and the way it looks. I’m here everyday.
29. Chuck | July 19th, 2006 at 7:37 pm
Hey, I like the site design! It’s very clean, very easy on the eyes. The logo still looks a little “18-24 demo”-ish, but it fits in pretty well with the rest of the site. It’ll take some getting used to, but it’s definately a better look than the old site.
30. anonymous | July 19th, 2006 at 11:07 pm
i hate it. it’s just not the same.
31. saundra | July 20th, 2006 at 4:44 am
Okay, I love your content… and I applaud clean simplicity…. BUT at first blush, this new design is timid, pastel milk-toast (like a template designed for “girls”). Where’s your power tie boys? You’re trying to attract broadcast heavyweights here!
Good luck!
From a practical standpoint, I can only see the top two stories without having to scroll down when I used to be able to glance at 4, 5 or 6 headlines right at log-on.
Sorry to be so blunt! Still love you

For a brief, odd moment, I thought my browser had been hijacked since after I typed in LostRemote.com it went to NowBreaking.com and an immediately unfamiliar looking Web site.
Then rationality returned (thanks to remembering that both anti-spyware and anti-virus were active and updated) and I actually stared.
Very nice, very clean. Looking forward to the rest of the build out.
33. El Dangeroso | July 20th, 2006 at 7:34 pm
I’m with saundra. It looks like someone left Lost Remote out in the sun and it got faded. A little indistinguishable from every other blog, content notwithstanding.
I want to look at Lost Remote and know I’m looking at Lost Remote, not TVNewser or Romenesko’s Obscure Store.
Save the pastels for Easter, boys.

Yeah, somehow please get the RSS fixed please. I never go to lostremote.com directly.
