MSNBC.com celebrates ten years on the web

I’m still recovering from last night’s MSNBC.com 10th anniversary bash in downtown Seattle. I was lucky enough to get an invite after MSNBC.com graciously asked me to speak at a session earlier in the day on the state of the media industry. Some prominent alums were in attendance at the party, from founder Merrill Brown and former editor-in-chief Dean Wright to former MSN GM Scott Moore. It was great to meet many MSNBC folks in person after trading emails for so long. Congrats, MSNBC.com!

figure out the difference between what’s on a web site and what’s on television.
all those prison documentaries and celeb bios were on msnbc on television.
wake up. smell some coffee and pay attention to a web site. or are you some kind of paid critic and consultant who doesn’t know his back end from his front end? like most of them.

has anyone ever figured out if MSNBC.com gets more unique viewers in one day than the TV network?
given some of the VERY low ratings of the shows on TV, it might be possible, right?

it’s one thing to criticize someone who may or may not know the difference between a computer and a tv, but to do it as “annoymous” strikes me as shickenchit.

Happy Birthday MSNBC. I still like you. Both online and onair. They should go more niche and do more documentaries. A CNN Presents-type network.
Now’s MSNBC’s chance to become an in-depth news and discovery channel instead of a topical, breaking news channel. Let Fox and CNN fight over the overused breaking news BS.
Just think, If MSNBC became everybody’s second favorite news channel, because of its different direction and content, then most likely it would be number one in ratings. You could compare this to the video game market: Nintendo (which is also in third place) is using this strategy against Sony (#1) and Microsoft (#2). Target a different audience and commit to owning it. Investors are saying it could work for Nintendo.
