NBC signs popular YouTube show

Cory Bergman July 22nd, 2006

Remember that pilot of Nobody’s Watching that was created for WB, rejected and then posted on YouTube? It’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, and now NBC is has signed the show. Says co-writer Bill Lawrence (who created Scrubs), “If network TV doesn’t embrace the internet as both a place to launch and test shows but also as a place where shows can live, they’re going to fall further and further behind.” Amen to that. Click below to watch the first part of the pilot… (Via Buzzmachine)

Do you think NBC looked at the signifigant drop-off in viewers for parts 2 and 3? Sure, it makes about 300,000 teenagers and college students feel really special that they helped “save” a program. But NBC better hope that those 300,000 turn into about a dozen or two million people and that they feel good enough about the program to see the entire show.

i may need to revisit my opinion on the future of youtube. even though i don’t see a model in which there is money to be made (legally) from someone else’s content, nbc’s recent buyout of ivillage makes me think they aren’t too concerned with making big dollar mistakes.

Interesting. Not sure how much faith I have in network opinion of quality after everyone let “Arrested Development” die. Maybe *they* should have posted on YouTube. Any bets on how many views an unaired “Arrested Development” episode would have gotten?

It’ll be a typical sitcom with typical bad acting, stupid plot, and cheesy jokes– I see it already.
