Steve Case on AOL/TW Merger: Sorry

In an interview with Charlie Rose, AOL co-founder Steve Case apologized for the 2001 mega merger that destroyed some $200 billion in shareholder value. Although Case called the deal’s aftermath a “disappointment,” he said he still believed it was “a good idea.”

It wasn’t a bad idea. He just wasn’t the right person to oversee it and then they just gave up.
I mean, how many video outlets do they have under their umbrella and why does AOL have their own news division and not just distribute CNN? I could go on and on about the lost opportunities and the mistake of hanging onto the outdated subscriber model for far too long, but it’s sort of like beating a dead horse. ButI don’t necessarily think the merger was the mistake, it was more the poor leadership that still hasn’t improved.
