Finding qualified web candidates

Stephen Warley July 26th, 2006

Over the last 6 months I have been repeatedly asked if I know any good candidates to run a website. The most ideal candidates are tough to find, but they are out there. Also, keep in mind when recruiting someone to run your website, you want someone with business experience, as well as an appreciation of developing content. A current job posting for a Web Operations Manager at WTVD-TV, the ABC affiliate in Raleigh-Durham wisely does just that. (Great opportunity by the way to really have an impact on the development of their site!) Hiring someone with just a journalism background is not necessarily going to help you build a successful web business. Read WTVD’s full job description . . . .

WTVD-TV, the Disney/ABC owned TV station in Raleigh-Durham, NC is seeking an individual to lead and manage our website and other on-line services. Minimum of 5 years of managing a content-focused website, MBAs preferred. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of content management systems, HTML, Macromedia Flash, on-line audio/video applications, and skill in the area of marketing and sales integration. Please mail resumes to:

Manager Bernie Prazenica
President and General Manager
411 Liberty Street
Durham, NC 27701

No phone calls please. EOE.

What does having an MBA have to do with running a web site? Seems like an odd request.

If you don’t have business experience, an MBA provides another option. Unfortunately, there are too few journalists who would be able to put a budget together and launch a business.

I’m curious how much would a job like this pay? Is it a 9a to 5p thing?

Should be $60K low-end for qualified.
Speaking as an MBA from a top school — we’re overrated. I’d take solid sales experience over an MBA any day of the week.

just b/c you know HTML and Flash doesn’t necessarily guaruntee something eye-catching or successful. you might still end up with a website that is ugly or confsing to navigate. try selling one of those to your viewers and potential advertisers.

SW is right on, it takes more than one person to run a web business… it takes many people to run it like a business, not “just” a web site.

Web sites deserve to be treated and valued like big media. Web sites have to be developed like any small to large business with focuses on the different pieces to make it successful either as engaging to the audience, or able to support its self and the people that want it to be a success.

    But, that’s just my 2 cents. :)s
