Study: DVR users watch less, not more

Cory Bergman July 27th, 2006

For the last few years, studies have shown that households with DVRs watch more TV than non-DVR households, but a new study concludes it’s the opposite. New data from Mediamark Research suggests that adults in DVR homes are 23% less likely to be heavy television viewers. The likely culprit: these homes are higher-income and wired for broadband. In fact, the study found that DVR users are 81% more likely to be heavy internet users. (Free reg. req.)

Yep. I validate that. Except for the high-income part.

I purchased a Sony Digital Living System (oh the pain), and find myself sitting on the couch with the wireless keyboard surfing more than watching what’s been recorded by MediaCenter.

Nothing cooler than surfing to NASA TV and watching the Space Shuttle takeoff, then setting MediaPlayer on repeat while my three year old sits transfixed. No silly anchors listening to themselves talk, just the straight feed for my boy!

    What were we talking about?

I suspect that busy people–without much time to watch TV–are more likely to buy DVRs in the first place. A more interesting study would track a single group before and after a DVR purchase.

I think Michael’s exactly right. I added DVR when I realized there were a handful of shows I really wanted to watch, but my schedule was busy enough that there was no way I could see them when they aired. But even with the time-shifting, there are still shows I’m resigned to watching on DVD.
