News.com’s Marguerite Reardon goes off on Time Warner’s Scientific Atlanta 8000 (below). “I wanted to throw the whole thing out my window,” she writes. As cable and satellite companies rush to add more features, new DVRs are becoming much less reliable than their predecessors. Meanwhile, we continue to wait for TiVo’s Series 3 to grace our presence, due out later this year.

Our Comcast DVR died 2 weekends ago. I was so angry! Now I have to reprogram all my shows into its terribly designed interface. I miss my TiVo.

When I said died, I meant made horrible crunching noises as the hard drive slowly ate itself.

My Time-Warner DVR unit routinely freezes and has to be rebooted by unplugging and reattaching the power cord — and they charge me 10 bucks a month to rent this fine machine.
I haven’t lost a program from the hard drive yet, but I have interrupted many programs in progress.
If you’re considering TW or Comcast machines, don’t do it … go with TiVo …
