AOL to cut 25% of workforce in restructuring effort

AOL will cut about 5,000 employees — that’s about a quarter of its global work force. This comes just a day after Time Warner announced it’s going to make the AOL service free for broadband users. The dialup model is dead, and AOL is trying save itself with an advertising model.

Obscure humor of the day: I tried going to http://www.aol.com in the hopes of perhaps grabbing an aol.com email - and it crashes my browser. The browser in question: Netscape 7 - made by…. AOL. [Granted, it's Netscape 7 for Mac OS 9.1 - neither of which are supported by anyone] So all those AOL-service television ads over the last year must have had no impact. One begs AOL to please review their Retention/Cancellations group for bad apples to include among the 5K - but something tells me it’s going to be the low-paid CS tech support lackies hitting the broiling streets.
