Bloggers catch doctored Reuters pic
Cory Bergman August 7th, 2006
A freelance photographer for Reuters has been suspended after bloggers discovered one of his pictures of a Beirut bombing had been manipulated to accentuate the smoke. Although the photographer said he was “trying to remove dust marks,” it certainly looks like a lot more than that, but you be the judge.

He should have been suspended - if not for photoshopping the picture, for very BAD photoshopping.

It’s the least convincing Photoshop job I’ve seen since, well, I tried Photoshopping something.

Geeze, it’s not just the obvious pattern repetition in the top of the smoke “cloud,” it’s also the weird way buildings got spliced and repeated to spread them out and make the column of smoke look taller.
Pretty cheesy.

So cheesy it makes one wonder how it got past the Reuter’s editors. Funny how these things can slip past you when they happen to fit into your world view.

I’m absolutely baffled as to why people assume think there’s some ulterior motive at play here. I mean, look at the two pictures! How is the photoshoped one worse? The smoke cloud is slightly bigger? They adjusted the levels to make the picture look better? Cause, I mean, when I saw that original picture, I was like “so what,” but now that there’s extra smoke, I totally *hate* Israel. Give me a break!
I have no idea why the guy did it, and he totally should be fired, but to imply that Reuters let the image slip through because they wanted to make Israel look bad is just nonsense.

Tell you what Jason. Show me where Reuters recently made an error that made which favors Israel and I might see your point. They’ve made two now which make Israel look bad.

Well, I’ve yet to see anyone explain exactly how this image makes Israel look “bad.”
Reuters are the only ones who look bad in this instance. The conspiracy theory holds no water.

yeah, like the bombing itself doesn’t make israel look barbaric enough this photographer had to doctor a picture to do that.
geez.

I agree with #7!

The sad thing is that the photoshop’d picture doesn’t actually reveal anything except that the photographer is really, really bad with Photoshop.

If you look closely at the smoke in the original, you can see the face of Mel Gibson.

I’ve been reading a few wire copies, and I’m wondering… just who ARE these “bloggers”? The media doesn’t seem fit to mention them by name…

on the lighter side…
the picture on the left looks like when my wife cooks for just the two of us while the picture on the right looks like when we have friends over.
in either case the fire dept. shows up, and we order out.

The picture on the left looked like the production truck at a Monday Night Football game moments after Eric Dickerson did a live sideline take, and the one on the right was moments after one by Lisa Guererro. Fortunately for football fans, that burning smell only lasted for one season.
