CNN.com lands first Exchange advertiser
Cory Bergman August 8th, 2006
Dell has signed up to sponsor CNN Exchange, CNN.com’s new user created content section. The company will get a video pre-roll spot on each user clip starting later in August (all clips are pre-screened before they appear online) in a sponsorship that runs through October, as well as sponsorship and ad opportunities elsewhere on the site. Not even two weeks old, CNN Exchange has just a handful of video clips and photos — which I imagine will take off in a hurry once it’s promoted on the air during a major story.

So the users do the job and CNN gets the money? Sounds like a good deal. Just go to YouTube.
PS: Who designed that service? It is a terrible user interface. In fact, it can’t even be called INTER-face since it looks like it was designed for the use of one individual: the designer who created it.

Sorry I don’t normally rant like this, but what’s up with CNN’s design and usability team? That exchange section is a mess. Was the information architchect on summer vacation? Where is the inter-section nav? (I think I might have found a couple of links at the very bottom of the page!) Why do some spotlight items link to user content (like videos and galleries) and other don’t? The names and the labels of the section aren’t clear or understandable (spotlights, ireports, itopics, cites: your sites?). The design is heavy seems like the Web in 1998, not 2006.
CNN.com you should check out Flickr (or any of the other new UGC sites to see how people who are serious about UGC approach design and usability). That section does not make me want to give my content to CNN (where they will slap in a site that looks like it took a drunk college freshman 15 minutes to design for Web 101 class. )
I’ll definitely send my content to Yahoo! Thirty-one million user as compared to 19 million and their site looks clean and freah (not to mention extremely usable).
Again, sorry about the rant. But with high user interest and then MONEY from Dell, we the CNN.com user deserve more than this!
