Sci Fi gearing up for Galactica’s third season

Cory Bergman August 9th, 2006

I can sense the geek excitement building as we near the premiere date for the third season of Sci Fi’s enormously popular Battlestar Galactica. The Galactica team has always been incredibly tech-savvy, and this season will be no exception. Starting on August 28, fans will be able to watch a 44-minute recap of the first two season on cable video-on-demand. When the season gets underway on October 6, Galactica producers will unveil a new video blog and a fresh slate of podcasts.

    I’m a big fan of this show, love it - they are incredibly plugged in for a show, but I guess I’m spoiled. They haven’t done much during their off season. Anybody know if the webisodes they said they were going to do are still on tap? In any event, I am SO looking forward to it.
    It is one of those shows that will never be fully appreciated beacuse a) it’s on a “low level” cable channel and doesn’t get network recognition; b) it’s still considered science fiction, but it’s really not and c)despite the recent Peabody award, it won’t get the big awards cause the people that vote for the Emmys, etc. are pretty much clueless and don’t get it. Case in point - the Ellen Burstyn nomination for best guest actress - for a 14 second appearance.

    The show was started because of an online movement. Its producer blogs and responds to his audience. (Including the occasional “you’re right, we blew that one” to the obsessed nitpicker crowd). It was among the first to put entire episodes online, embraced iTMS early, and keeps embracing the web.

    One bone to pick with Jeff: BSG is, in fact, true SciFi. Science Fiction is not supposed to be just spaceships fighting other spaceships. SciFi is supposed to take real-world issues and put them into a “far-out” context as another way of looking at them. The best scifi allows you to look at an issue without other prejudices getting in the way. In that regard, BSG is one of the best SciFi series ever made.

    Steve;
    Of course, you are right on the science fiction thing. I should clarify: a majority of the the general audience uses that superficial definition of science fiction (spaceships fighting starships, etc.) Using that definition as a base, many people will not even give it a chance and don’t expose themselves to the excellence of BSG.

    I’ve always been a big Ron Moore fan. The Star Trek DS9 was, I think, the best Trek series ever, even though it was probably the farthest from the Roddenberry vision. But that’s what made it good. It was Ron Moore’s vision of the Trek Universe. I don’t think he’d ever do it, but I wish it was him and not JJ Abrams doing the next Trek movie - but that’s another topic.

    You’re right on the other stuff too - that’s why I say I’m spoiled about it. It’s just been rather quiet since the season finale and I just want more! MORE, dammit!
    :)

    Great, now how about not waiting 8 weeks to broadcast it in HD!

    LOL it was BSG that finally pushed me to figure out torrents. They staggered the release of BSG here in Canada but I wasn’t willing to wait. Once I figured it out I finally had access to tons of BBC and American stuff I would never have been able to see here in Canada due to our protectionist Tv laws. Finally two months ago I finally canceled cable after realizing everything I want I can get for free in HD and with no ads. Thanks BSG ;)
