The Chinese effort to download and translate U.S. TV

This is a fascinating story, well worth a read. There is a homegrown effort in China to download episodes of American TV shows, translate them, put up subtitles, and redistribute them. Piracy, yes, but it gets around the Chinese censors and it’s all-volunteer. (NYT free reg. req.)

“Fan-subs”, ie subtitles created by fans for other fans who do not understand English, are very popular in France too. Teams of amateur “subbers” are created on forums and are assigned to specific show based on the demand. Except here it’s not to get around the censors, but just to have the show faster and not in an awful French dubbed version.

Although I did find this article interesting, it should be noted that Chinese fascination with American culture is not unheard of. There once was a time when the 80s TV cop show “Hunter” was once the most watched TV series in China. Yes, the series with NFL-lineman-turned-actor Fred Dryer in the lead – that “Hunter”. In a TV interview, Dryer attributed that show’s popularity to the fascination that Chinese audiences have with the American criminal justice system, particularly the concept of criminals having certain rights. FYI.
