Rejecting swag at conventions

I’ll be the first to admit I have some strange quirks and one of them is rejecting swag at conventions. I did it again today at the annual convention of the Texas Association of Broadcasters. There’s that moment when the convention staffer is eager to hand over a bag filled with swag and I politely say, “No thank you.” The look on their face is either one of shock or bewilderment (as if who on earth doesn’t want free stuff)? I just don’t like carrying extra stuff around that I know I’ll end up throwing away. Maybe when I have kids one day, I’ll save the swag for them, but for now I’ll just pass on it. What kind of swag do you think is worth saving?

Oh, it’s all worthless crap. I use the amount of swag being handed out as an index of the economy every year. That’s the only value I give it.

Funny, I reject the swag, too. However, I’m always interested about what’s actually in the bag so I know what I’m passing up. Top rejection: An Xm satellite radio with 1-year’s prepaid subscription.

Pardon me if I’m intruding here (long time reader, very infrequent poster), but coming from the video game journalism side of the aisle (be kind) I have to say the only swag I make a point to take at conventions and press events are things useful to my job. Game demos and multimedia discs? Yes. Giant inflatable swords and Pokemon stickers? No.
The only “junk” I pick up are things to give away as souvenirs to friends back home, although I’m not above keeping a remote control Mario Kart toy I won at the Electronic Entertainment Expo one year. Basically, let everyone else collect the t-shirts and lanyards. That leaves more of the useful swag for me and my team.
