MSNBC, KUSA break Ramsey story
Cory Bergman August 16th, 2006
An interesting sequence of events today in the Jon Benet Ramsey arrest story. First, MSNBC’s Dan Abrams (who’s also the cable network’s GM) took to the airwaves to explain that John Ramsey said an arrest was imminent. Then KUSA breaks the story of the actual arrest on 9News.com (not a bad little exclusive, eh?) MSNBC.com waited a moment with the story, while CNN.com went ahead and posted a couple lines attributed to KUSA. So now it’s time for the media circus to kick into high gear again — or will it?

MSNBC might have broken the story, but can they keep the viewers?
In a word, No.
You can be sure, though, that they will milk the tabliod angle for all it is worth.

Only three days ago the Lifetime afternoon movie was the Jon Benet Ramsey case. Isn’t that a coincidence….

The media circus will, of course, kick into high gear. And it will go straight to the “reflexive navel gazing stage” in which the media asks: “Did the media go too far in accusing the Ramseys?”
Most fun will be watching the talk show hosts now sympathize with John Ramsey and the late Patsy, who may indeed been a patsy. The same talk shows who screeched and screamed “why won’t they take lie detectors” and all that garbage.
Then, of course, those same shows that won’t allow the innocent until proven guilty standard will be the first to jump on the new suspect.
