Media share blame in JonBenet mess

Cory Bergman August 17th, 2006

I wholeheartedly agree with ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper’s blog post today that reminds us how the Ramsey family was basically convicted in the media in the months after JonBenet’s murder. Sure, detectives and prosecutors were planting a lot of seeds, but the media didn’t think twice about running with them. “I hope the media and authorities are looking long and hard at their own shameful behavior in this whole affair,” Tapper writes. Probably not, unfortunately. (Via TVNewser)

Ironically, I think it’s *possible* this guy is getting convicted in the media, too. His confession is at odds so far with the reality of what happened, his ex-wife is giving him an alibi he doesn’t want, etc. Prepare yourself, media: he might not have done it.

It’s all just speculation until the DNA tests reveal all. Reporters should restrain themselves a bit until the results of these tests are known.

What do you mean the Ramesy family wasn’t involved? Of course they were, because this guy had nothing too do with it. How easy people forget the ransom note WAS written by Patricia Ramsey handwriting samples prove it and when the police asked for a hand written sample she faked it.

Yeah, if I had to guess right now, I’d vote against Tapper — one of the Ramsey’s still gets my vote.

Adm says: “Reporters should restrain themselves.” While I couldn’t agree more, that’s a fairly obvious statement in unfortunately too many cases. But the nature of the business, largely spearheaded by out-of-touch news managers who push “first” more than “accurate,” doesn’t allow for restraint.

[...] Add Poynter’s Bob Steele to the “look before leaping” crowd in the JonBenet Ramsey arrest story. Bob rightly points us to the sad case of Richard Jewell, the man who was the definition of “convicted in the media” for the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta. (Did you know that Jewell’s lawyer, L. Lin Wood, is the same lawyer who represents the Ramseys?) [...]
