PGA.com streaming pipes of coverage

Not tubes, folks. Pipes. As in CNN Pipeline, which is powering the live online-only TNT coverage of the PGA Championship on PGA.com. A simple registration gets you in, and then you can watch live uninterrupted coverage (even with play-by-play announcers) on pipe 1, the “player cam” (player perspective) on pipe 2, “inside the ropes” (profile pieces) on pipe 3 and “analysis and tips” on pipe 4. Well done.

Interesting to watch how this type of thing will do. All sorts of programming is ending up on the web now, but who in their right mind wants to watch live sports on a computer screen, or worse yet, a tiny mobile screen? Seems like they’ve done a nice job devising some alternative content to go along with the broadcast of the golf tournament. And this will probably do well, just like the NCAA Tournament did online, because it’s happening during business hours. But finding companion online content for sports that are played nights and weekends — there’s the challenge.

Who in the world? Someone not near a tv that’s who. That’s who and that is THE market. The growing number who want their media where they are and on the device they have at hand.

If their PGA coverage is using the same Pipeline technology, you can double-click the stream to make it fullscreen. Sure, the pipes are more lossy than a television signal, but it’s not that far off and my computer probably has a better video card than my tv.
