‘Snakes on a Plane’ top weekend movie
Cory Bergman August 20th, 2006
The movie with the most viral hype in the history of Hollywood has debuted as the number one movie over the weekend, but there’s not much competition out there. Beyond the initial burst of pop culture curiosity, I wonder if SOAP will quickly fall out of favor in the days to come. Did you see it? Your predictions?

Yeah - a $15 million opening weekend for a hyped film should be considered a huge disappointment. The fanboys have probably all seen it by now. So “Snakes,” forgive me, doesn’t seem to have legs.
It only cost $30 million to make, however, so it will recoup that and still make a profit thanks to DVDs, VOD, downloads and ancillaries.
Apparently internet buzz does not translate well to ticket sales.

1. Don’t count it out just yet…I think that it will do better than these initial results indicate.
2. Saw it - loved it - money well spent!

Was only a winner by including Thrusday’s night into the total. Without the added night, it was a second place finisher and even more disappointing to the analysts.
With all that “viral buzz” you wulda thunk better. Coud it be that the hype about both the movie and power of online viral buzz is a little overstated?

haven’t seen it yet–but boy oh boy! have I heard enough of the hype!
IMO, the viral buzz may be overstated–because viral buzz marketers might be looking for some proof of its importance (among young people esp.)
I might still go see SOAP–after the crowds have died down. I got tired of theater talk-back and audience antics back when Rocky Horror still made the midnight movie rounds.
