Petition starts to keep MSNBC on XM radio

Steve Safran August 21st, 2006

XM Satellite Radio quietly announced it’s dumping MSNBC from its lineup as of September 4 “due to changes in the MSNBC schedule line-up.” (Very quietly, actually. Look toward the bottom of their page.) The Daily Kos points us to an online petition to “Save MSNBC on XM Satellite Radio.” I can summarize the petition’s argument in two words: Olbermann’s funny. Agreed. And I like my choices of cable news audio as I drive around. Can’t you two work it out? If not for us, for the … OK, for us. (Thanks, CM!)

Keep MSNBC on XM Satellite Radio….. it’s a great station and should be on the air

  • 2. Danny  |  August 21st, 2006 at 6:38 pm

XM tells you to call 202-380-4094 to comment on MSNBC being dropped.

Hopefully lots of complaints are sent to 202-380-4094. Let them know you don’t want MSNBC dropped.

  • 3. Christopher  |  August 21st, 2006 at 6:48 pm

Please keep MSNBC on XM Satellite Radio.

  • 4. Good riddance  |  August 21st, 2006 at 7:00 pm

Please do NOT keep MSNBC on XM Radio, the network barely covers news and is useless on a radio dial. I especially don’t need to hear their commentators attacking other journalists all day when you could have a station on that actually covers the day’s events.

    Good job, XM!

  • 5. Enrique  |  August 22nd, 2006 at 6:17 am

It seems like MSNBC can’t win these days.

The netowork is struggling to keep its head above water, the radio arm is going off the air…. I bet they have a lot of nervous staffers these days.

  • 6. Carl Lazenby  |  August 25th, 2006 at 12:30 pm

The worst possible decision by XM! I can only hope this is a publicity stunt. If not, they probably will limit us to dead CBS, or CNN, or worst of all, FOX.

    Stupid XM!

  • 7. Barry Grimm  |  August 25th, 2006 at 8:14 pm

Another bad decision by a company that can’t afford any more bad decisions. Hopefully Sirius will add MSNBC.

  • 8. kevin buchtel  |  August 27th, 2006 at 11:34 am

please keep msn on xm . kevin buchtel

  • 9. Scott M  |  August 28th, 2006 at 1:54 pm

Are you kidding me? Thank you so much XM! Have you actually listened to MSNBC during a morning commute - it’s a repeat - about every 10 minutes it’s a repeat… the same jokes, same news headlines, same weather, same jokes, same laughter - about every 10 minutes.

  • 10. Tim J  |  August 29th, 2006 at 7:01 pm

Drop MSNBC? They have some of the most intelligent and hardhitting news programs in broadcasting. Hardball…Meet the Press…etc….. I don’t listen to the repeats, but every day is fresh and newsworthy. If Sirius grabs MSNBC….I’m cancelling my XM subscription and moving over to Sirius.

  • 11. Mark Lang  |  August 30th, 2006 at 8:31 pm

Please keep MSNBCon XM. I really enjoy the programming.

  • 12. Judy  |  August 31st, 2006 at 4:00 pm

Why not get rid of Fox? Is MSNBC too liberal? Hearst is a major owner of XM. Is it political?

  • 13. Dana  |  August 31st, 2006 at 4:15 pm

If Sirius grabs MSNBC, I am switching also.

    KEEP MSNBC ON XM!!

  • 14. Chris  |  September 1st, 2006 at 10:35 am

I especially enjoy Hardball and Keith Obermann. If MSMBC pops up anywhere, you’ll find me there!

  • 15. Anonymous  |  September 1st, 2006 at 1:30 pm

    MSNBC is for nitwits.
    All fluff.
Seems to be run by high schoolers.

  • 16. Perry  |  September 3rd, 2006 at 7:26 am

One of the only reasons I subscribe to XM.
Drop MSNBC and you will loose me

  • 17. Brad Rolfness  |  September 4th, 2006 at 4:45 pm

Bring back MSNBC! It is the closet thing to really “fair and balanced” news radio available today. MSNBC also has what I consider the best show with Keith Olbermann’s “Countdown”.

  • 18. Tim Brooks  |  September 4th, 2006 at 7:04 pm

Pretty much the only station that I listen to on XM. I’m going to consider dropping my subscription. Will switch to sirius. I also think XM’s announcment is very disingenious. We’re dropping due to “Changes in our lineup”????? What does that mean? Totally dishonest.

  • 19. Frank Hart  |  September 4th, 2006 at 9:24 pm

So that leaves XM with Fox News, Fox Talk, America Right, and the Family Channel featuring James Dobson.

I wonder what their agenda is.

  • 20. Dwight Johnson  |  September 5th, 2006 at 7:58 am

A major attraction on XM is Keith Oberman and Chris Mathews, to to lose their broadcasts is a major blow.

I have a new C-6 Corvette with XM built in; losing MSNBC is unacceptable, and cuts me out of a good news channel during the afternoon drive home.

  • 21. al jordan  |  September 5th, 2006 at 9:29 am

When we travel we mostly listen to MSNBC.

We love Keith Obermann. When the new cars come out, I will be buying, and my new vehicle will have the satellite service that has MSNBC.

  • 22. Monique  |  September 5th, 2006 at 11:48 am

I was shocked and disappointed when I got into my car and learned that XM is no longer carrying MSNBC. What could they be thinking?? It has the best news programming out there bar none: Intelligent, hard-hitting, and supremely entertaining. I listen at all hours, and I don’t see why I’d keep XM at this point. I’ll switch to Sirius in a heartbeat if they pick up MSNBC. At a minimum, I MUST have my Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews.

  • 23. Connie  |  September 5th, 2006 at 12:46 pm

I tried to call the number and complain last week but the voice mail box was full and when I tried to transfer to the number it recommended I was cut off. I complained on the website also but I did not get a response.

I also got XM because of MSNBC. I will cancel for sure.

  • 24. Lina  |  September 5th, 2006 at 5:23 pm

What the heck!!! Are you kidding. Get it back. If Sirus gets MSNBC, it gets me too

  • 25. Jon  |  September 5th, 2006 at 7:58 pm

Goes double for me, because I’ve got two cars.

  • 26. Ron  |  September 6th, 2006 at 1:15 am

If MSNBC goes off XM, I’m dropping my account. It’s all I listen to. And I too have two cars.

  • 27. Charles G  |  September 6th, 2006 at 2:09 am

This was the poorest decision that XM made so far.
Dropping MSNBC was a mistake and it will cost them customers and revenue soon.

I want my Hardball and Meet the Press!!

Sirius here I come if you pick MSNBC up.
    GUARENTEED!!!!!

    GOOD BUY XM FOOLS!!!!!

  • 28. Madolyn  |  September 6th, 2006 at 3:50 am

Please keep MSNBC on XM. It provides an alternative means of getting the news. I especially enjoy Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. It would be a shame to lose that network. NBC has been a part of my life through TV and I appreciated that it was continuing into the new form of broadcasting. Some of us do enjoy listening to both sides and not the “bumper sticker” mentality of Fox and the like.

  • 29. Gail Stephens  |  September 6th, 2006 at 7:04 am

When I heard that XM was removing MSNBC from their lineup, I was dumbfounded. It makes absolutely no sense… why has it been removed? I do a lot of traveling and the only station I listen to is MSNBC! In fact, MSNBC is the reason I initially bought an XM radio receiver, now it’s part of my GM radio. Because I’m a “news junkie,” I was forced to listen to CNN all the way back from Santa Fe yesterday and it repeats the same old news just as much, if not more than MSNBC. And, Fox news is a total waste of time. All the news channels repeat the same news over and over -the difference is, MSNBC has the BEST coverage of breaking events - bar none, and never has to apologize for errors in their reporting. It’s apparent to me that the slashing of MSNBC by XM must be political. IF MSNBC DOES NOT RETURN TO XM AND MOVES TO SIRIUS, SO WILL I!

  • 30. paul  |  September 6th, 2006 at 9:22 am

why drop msnbc, please explain it to me. its not as if its being replaced or there is a lack of avail. stations #’s on xm. i’d like to know the REAL reason. —– money, politics, power play???

  • 31. Brian Shipley  |  September 6th, 2006 at 9:33 am

I subscribed to XM because of Air America and MSNBC so half the reason I got XM in the first place is gone.

  • 32. Doug Booher  |  September 6th, 2006 at 1:49 pm

I agree with those of you who think they should keep it on. It was my favorite channel and the main one that I listened to.

i urge you to contact the Talk Programming director as he told me personally last week that this was an issue due to ratings and they are motivated by the voices of their subscribers. please take a moment to give him a call.

I have been fired from every job I have had. This XM deal is the next step toward me being shown the door again. My contract expires with MSNBC March 1, 2007. I will be gone before that. Hopefully, Bill Maher or the Cartoon Network will throw me a bone(r). I am so stupid, that I used my MSNBC email account to write to a fan and call Rita Cosby ” dumber than a suitcase of rocks.” I have attacked Nancy Grace, Barbara Bush, Suzy Kolber and Lisa Guerrero, Ann Coulter, Rita Cosby, etc., but never anyone to their face and never anyone who would surely kick my teeth down my giraffe throat, thank God.

  • 34. Glen  |  September 6th, 2006 at 7:55 pm

When I decided to jump on the satellite radio wagon last year, I was open to both XM and Sirius. The thing that had me choose XM over Sirius was MSNBC.

Now that MSNBC is gone, I have no reason to stay. I was able to get a good deal on the radio in the first place, so I’m not out any money. The moment Sirius has a deal on any of their units, I’m gone.

Good thing I didn’t get the XM option in my new car, I would have been furious.

  • 35. Greg in NJ  |  September 7th, 2006 at 4:34 am

Don’t forget to check out the building petition to bring MSNBC back to XM. The following link has info on the situation and on the right side of the page (under “Links”) is a link to the petition (”Save MSNBC on XM Petition”).

  • 36. Bonita  |  September 7th, 2006 at 9:34 am

Put MSNBC back on XM RADIO that the only reason for having XM Radio

  • 37. Lin  |  September 7th, 2006 at 10:01 am

I’m Sirius. If MSNBC shows up on that other radio, then I’m gone. My son already wants to move over when NASCAR does next year, so I’m getting pressure at home. I love the baseball, but I can live without it if I can hear Countdown every night on the way home.

  • 38. Rod  |  September 8th, 2006 at 6:40 am

If MSNBC is gone — so am I. Good riddence.

  • 39. tc lasky  |  September 8th, 2006 at 4:41 pm

i chose xm over sirius because of msnbc. i can’t wait until my subscription expires.

  • 40. David  |  September 8th, 2006 at 10:16 pm

MSNBC has made some poor programming decisions; but I’m devoted to Hardball. Without MSNBC I’ll be leaving XM

  • 41. Scott  |  September 9th, 2006 at 11:25 am

Not enough channel space on XM for MSNBC? Give me a break! Whatever the reason for pulling it, MSNBC was my reason for subscribing. Bye-Bye, XM.

  • 42. Red  |  September 9th, 2006 at 9:24 pm

I’m in the news business. It’s my job to listen to Chris Matthews every day. I drive home between 5 pm and 6 pm, so I specifically bought a GM car, so i would have XM radio, so i would be able to listen to matthews. Without MSNBC on XM, I now have the wrong car (I would not otherwise have purchased a GM car), and i have no way to do my job, other than staying at work an extra hour. I don’t think XM appreciates the extent to which people plan their lives around certain “givens.” When the givens change, all kinds of things change. Had i suspected XM would drop MSNBC, i would not have signed a 2-year subscription package.

PS: I would feel the same if XM pulled Fox or CNN. These are my lifelines to the world when i am in my car, and I specifically (to now) have rented Avis cars to get XM when I travel. The loss is quite beyond description.

  • 43. John  |  September 11th, 2006 at 9:17 am

Yep I’m PO’ed at XM for dumping MSNBC (it was their decision, according to MSNBC). They say that they may reappear, probably on SIrius.

  • 44. Mike  |  September 11th, 2006 at 11:34 am

Like many others, I chose XM because of MSNBC. I like to keep informed with the world around me, politically and otherwise, and try to glean the truth by listening to several news sources. I enjoyed being able to continue listening to something being aired on MSNBC on the TV if I needed to run errand. I even bought the ridiculously priced INNO radio so I could keep up with things while I was working outside.

Personally, I feel MSNBC and CNN provide a more balanced American news mix than any one else. I am very disappointed that XM chose to drop them for whatever the reason. I have five XM radios spread across my family so I guess you could say I am somewhat invested. I love music, but I also love my news. I too, will be watching to see if SIRIUS picks up MSNBC. I am one of those who still believe in loyalty, but lately I have noticed many businesses are only in it for themselves. XM appears to be just another one. I wish they would reconsider.

  • 45. wm jones  |  September 11th, 2006 at 1:51 pm

KEEP MSNBC YOU IDIOTS. i HAVE 3 SUBSCRIPTIONS AND IF YOU DON’T, MY CHEVY IS GONE SOON. THE OTHER TWO ARE PORTABLE AND WE’RE OFF TO SIRRIUS. JEEEEEESUS WHAT A STUPID DECISION.

BY THE WAY, THOSE WHO SAY IT’S OK TO DROP MSNBC…..DON’T LISTEN TO IT.

    PLEEEEESE!

  • 46. KC Carter  |  September 11th, 2006 at 5:20 pm

MSNBC and Keith Olbermann are 2 of the 3 reasons I have XM in my car. Hopefully they won’t drop the other one, or I and my three radios are gone too, as are several family members whom I also gave XM radios/subscriptions as gifts too.

  • 47. Ron  |  September 11th, 2006 at 7:30 pm

MSNBC and I are very much alike, we are both gone from XM

  • 48. Robin Edwards  |  September 11th, 2006 at 8:10 pm

I am so very disappointed about this decision. I now feel that I have no news station at all. The other channels just don’t help me to feel informed. I listen to Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann every day, and my work schedule doesn’t permit me to watch in on tv. Please reconsider your decision, I am lost without this network. Plus, Keith Olbermann is funny! What better comedy could a person ask for and be informed at the same time! Priceless!

  • 49. Joy Klinger  |  September 12th, 2006 at 11:09 am

I miss MSNBC–especially listening to Chris Matthews on my way home from work. Why not leave MSNBC on and consider dropping one of the other news channels–like Fox…

  • 50. Oscar Wiygul  |  September 12th, 2006 at 2:40 pm

  • 52. LKD  |  September 13th, 2006 at 7:42 am

THE reason we got XM Radio was so we could listen to MSNBC on the road! WHY????????????????? Please reconsider and put it back on! It is THE news junkie’s channel. We’ll be watching to see if Sirrius adds MSNBC so we can SWITCH!

  • 53. Judy Stokes  |  September 13th, 2006 at 12:11 pm

Whoever at XM made the decision to drop MSNBC, he, she, they or it are callous and disloyal to your listeners, and you’d be better off without their input. OUTput is what is needed for decision-makers who are so ignorant and self-serving as to drop fabulous programs like Hardball, Countdown and Meet the Press from your line-up. One wonders if someone at XM has tender political toes. How unethical and unbusiness to react in such a way at the expense of your customers. Y’all have really done a stupid thing. I hate you for this.

  • 54. pete gonzales  |  September 14th, 2006 at 1:33 pm

I like Oberman he straight to the point, at least he does not skew the facts like O’Reilly and Tucker Carlson or Grace where people are killing themselves on her show……those no talent hacks..lol.

  • 55. james  |  September 16th, 2006 at 5:56 pm

MSNBC is an important station that features Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, two well respected giants in the field of Political Journalism and commentary. Hardball at 5pm worked perfectly for me on the east coast as it aired at 5pm, the time I ordinarily left work. Chris has great guests and he rarely would go easy on any of them. In 30 minutes I felt like he summarized the important political events of the day in an unbiased fashion. What are we left with now, Air America ? I generally like Randi Rhodes, but she can be as totalitarian as the wing nuts she rails against. For XM to axe MSNBC, I have to wonder if was done through stupidity or Hearst Publications had just about enough of the brazen Bush bashing.

  • 56. joyce Jewell  |  September 16th, 2006 at 7:29 pm

One of the main reasons I joined XM was to listen to MSNBC — specifically Keith Olberman and Chris
Matthews. You certainly have enough ranting from
FOX. Bring MSNBC back, I’m considering dropping out.
Seriously — this is a major omission.

  • 57. wilfred Brunner  |  September 16th, 2006 at 7:41 pm

I have 2 reasons for having XM. Dylan and MSNBC. Dylan’s only on once a week - I USED to listent to MSNBC every day. I probably won’t renew without it.

  • 58. t weiland  |  September 25th, 2006 at 10:15 pm

MSNBC was the main reason I subscribed. Why keep FOX news… let’s see, who is a major stock owner with XM? I hope Sirus picks them up, I’ll jump so fast!

  • 59. TT  |  September 28th, 2006 at 6:02 am

The only reason that I signed up for XM, was to have access to MSNBC during my commute home and at work. I will admit that there are a lot of repeats of headlines, but it is great alternative to the fox news station and otherwise tightly controlled message of the right. I will call the telephone number to complain, but if Sirius picks up this station then I will switch and take my investment if XM with me. Respectfully, an angry stockholder and listener.

MSNBC only program worth paying for….planning on cancelling service

  • 61. Danny S  |  October 8th, 2006 at 4:04 pm

I PLAN ON CANCELLING XM. MSNBC WAS THE BEST THING ABOUT XM.

  • 62. jessie  |  October 10th, 2006 at 7:45 am

I love MSNBC and cannot believe it is gone - please get it back ASAP!

  • 63. Randall  |  October 13th, 2006 at 7:25 pm

Dropping MSNBC instead of some obscure channel is a terrible decision. MSNBC is one of the reasons I subscribed in the first place. My evening commute without Hardball is now a bummer.

  • 64. kathy  |  October 18th, 2006 at 11:04 am

    i am going through msnbc withdrawal on xm!! if sirius picks them up, it will be xm’s loss. B I G M I S T A K E !!!

We love MSNBC on long drives especially; please bring it back

  • 66. R Noble  |  October 30th, 2006 at 9:25 pm

I am cancelling my subscription to XM .
Msnbc with Chris Matthews and Keith are the best news on radio or TV. They are gone so I am no longer paying to listen to the likes of FOX

  • 67. Lynne D  |  November 2nd, 2006 at 7:35 am

Is there ANY chance of a change of heart? MSNBC is the best for political coverage. CNN is too biased and too repetitive. FOX is a joke. ABC is too much fluff. Please work this out! Can’t you just get Chris Matthews and Keith on? Chris has THE BEST lineup of guests on his show every night. Keith tells it like it is. We’ll be watching to see if your competitor picks up MSNBC so we can switch. What is the problem?

  • 68. BAM  |  November 10th, 2006 at 12:52 pm

I have been trying to cancel my XM Radio subscription for months. Talking to the retention team did nothing. They say they can’t find my account but they keep billing me every month. Anyone else having trouble like this? Any ideas on how to get through to them to get action?

  • 69. Robert B,  |  November 13th, 2006 at 12:00 pm

I am really dissapointed and feel cheated. I have two XM radios and like many other’s my buying decision was tied to MSNBC.

I am a big fan of Imus, Mathews and Oberman. This does not mean I agree with them any more that I do with O’Riely and Hannity.

I am seriously considering dropping XM and going to Sirus. What a shame. This is a really dumb decision.

  • 70. Steve B  |  January 6th, 2007 at 7:02 am

I just cancelled my subscription to XM and am going out today to buy Sirius. I chose XM originally because of MSNBC. I was torn between MSNBC and Howard Stern, but I’m a news junky so I went for XM and MSNBC. Now that MSNBC is dropped…..Hello Howard Stern!! XM…you blew it.

Imus belongs on XM radio along with all the other great talk shows on XM. It’s where I get to know the candidates running for office and the real news happening in Iraq. His guests are so interesting and informative and he is the most informed host I’ve ever listened to. Please hire him.
