PGA.com served one million streams

Cory Bergman August 23rd, 2006

TNT streamed web-exclusive live coverage of the PGA Championship on PGA.com last week — powered by CNN’s Pipeline technology — and the results are in. PGA.com says it served up one million streams, brought in two million unique users and saw an 18 percent jump in page views over last year’s peak. “PGA.com Pipeline’s success, both from a traffic and performance standpoint, coupled with our strong television ratings, indicates that our online product not only didn’t erode our television audience at all, but actually complemented it,” said David Levy, Turner Sports president.

LOL! Who are they trying to fool? What’s “Pipeline technology”? There is no technology behind Pipeline, with the exception of a bunch of old-school coding combined with the same windows media player seen on millions of other sites.
Oh wait… maybe they mean the fact they designed custom controls for the media player: that is, they deteriorated the only thing that Microsoft actually didn’t get wrong.
I’m glad for the success of the the initiative for Turner and the PGA fans, but such success has nothing to do with Pipeline technology: the same results, actually better results, could have been achieved using any other “player”. On the Pipeline side, it is a lame marketing attemp to expose people to a product they do not want, need or like! They are so desperate that it isn’t even funny.

I have to agree. I don’t understand this “Pipeline” technology. Because what I saw on PGA wasn’t a downloadable video application like the “Pipeline” on CNN.com . This looks to me like a Flash interface made to look like a downloadable player. Too bad they don’t offer that on CNN.com. I had a terrible time with that download when I tried it late last year.

Beyond that I don’t undestand the need for a Pipeline Brand? Why would CNN — which has one of the best brands in the world — need such a silly sub-brand? And that logo is terrible. I hope they didn’t pay anyone for to add parenthesis around a word.

People like live streams of golf. That makes sense. Making a big deal that some made-up technology doesn’t make sense.

It is a little tiresome to have content companies tout technology instead of content. The content on CNN Pipeline is NOT compelling.

Check out the compelling Katrina interactive map on the New York Times today. It has a simple integrated player and it is great content. How come CNN Pipeline technology doesn’t allow that?

When PGA has a cool interface the combines the map (or satellite view) of the course, player profiles/stats, and live video combine together for an amazing interactive presentation, that’s when we should thank the user experience designers and technologist.

(Oh and remember way before Pipeline, CNN had live streams in the days of Clinton impeachment. And back then they didn’t try to trick up all by stretching the video to 16×9.)

I think we should all reject the hype on these things and force content companies to improve their presetations.
