How long until the FCC penalizes the Emmys?
Steve Safran August 28th, 2006
In her acceptance speech, Dame Helen Mirren, who won a “Best Actress” award at the Emmys, said she was glad she didn’t fall “ass over tit” on her way up to the podium. That’s an FCC twofer! Compounding the swear, Calista Flockhart repeated it and so did Craig Ferguson. Six swears times $325,000 = $1.95 million in fines, should one person complain to the FCC. Won’t someone please think of the children?

Well, I took the time to complain. My first draft was rather good, but then I realized that they’ll probably dismiss it as a prank, so I cleaned it up.
Still, it was hard to delete the lines “won’t someone think of the children.
Please, everybody, enter a complaint. This is the best way to highlight how goddamn stupid these laws are.

Are “ass” and “tit” actually outlawed?

Come on! An awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of the industry that invented T&A, and which also included the three Charlie’s Angels that commoditized it, and they’re going to fine them just for saying it?

Is ‘tit’ some sort of swear word?
I mean, she didn’t show her tits on live TV…..
And she’s British! If they can’t get away with saying slightly naughty things, who can?

Wait, I heard that there might have been some actual nipple visable on live TV

On these live events, you indeed take your pocketbook in you rhands if you don’t use delay. Again, public airwares. If you want tits and ass all the time, move the show to HBO.

Yes: “Tits” is one of the famous “Seven Dirty Words” made famous by George Carlin.
There was also a wardrobe malfunction nipple slip not many people caught. However, the folks at Best Week Ever did. I’m not saying you should go to their blog or anything…

so would one of the little fellows qualify as a “dirty word” all by its lonesome, or would it have to be mentioned as a set???

An appropriate comment for a show that honored, among others, Aaron Spelling - father (or at least enabler) of T&A.

Graphic violence can be found across the broadcast spectrum almost nightly, but the boobs at the FCC are increasingly concerned with only words — most of which are innocuous!
If they have the audacity to fine for an “ass over tit” comment, we’re really in a scary and “ass-backwards” predicament!! It would be somewhat like stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime.

[...] Good Lord, I was kidding. But the Parents Television Council has filed an indecency complaint with the FCC because Helen Mirren said she was glad she didn’t fall “tits over ass” on her way up to accept her Emmy. L. Brent Bozell of the PTC writes on the PTC site: “It is utterly irresponsible and atrocious for NBC to air this vulgar language during the safe harbor time when millions of children were in the viewing audience. People are getting sick and tired of networks allowing unedited profanity on their award shows in front of millions of youngsters, and with NBC this practice is becoming habitual.” [...]
