All a ploy for media attention?
Cory Bergman August 28th, 2006
In its second big scoop, Denver’s KUSA is reporting that the DNA sample taken from John Mark Karr is not a match with the foreign DNA found on JonBenet Ramsey’s body. And charges will not be filed against him in connection with the case. Did Karr dream this up for the media attention? Says Gary Harris, Karr’s family attorney, “He obsesses. He wanted to be a rock star one time. He’s a dreamer. He’s the kind of guy who wants to be famous.” He certainly got his wish. Did the news media go too far in sensationalizing him and/or convicting him? Once again, the JonBenet Ramsey case will spark some serious media soul-searching.

And after the media soul searching, nothing will change. “Stop us before we overreact again!”

in contrast to the sago mine tragedy where EVERY media outlet proclaimed all were found alive at least this time there were a handful of skeptics who didn’t bite.
granted they were few and far between.

JonBenet has become more than just another murdered little girl for the media to exploit — the story has really become a crime of national significance. Covering it heavily is appropriate.
It wasn’t the media that found JMK and gave him a platform. It was the DA who announced his upcoming arrest. The media just followed the lead.
It was actually voices in the media that pretty quickly started sounding notes of skepticism.

As Howard says, after the first 20 hours of frenzy or so, at least *some* outlets were restraining themselves. In NYC, the Daily News raised questions the next day, while the Post screamed “HOW I KILLED HER” (maybe preserving just a little bit of wiggle room with that first-person pronoun).
At a party last week, I asked people in the room whether they thought Karr killed her. No one said yes. Their impression came in some way from the media, so I think that shows he wasn’t entirely “convicted by the media”.
ps. Based on my comment on this 8/17 Karr post, I will be joining The Safran Group as a media consultant…whether Steve asks me to or not:

Will this be the point at which cable says: Maybe we need to look at ourselves and figure out what the hell we are doing?
One can hope but the best bet is against.
Sadly.

Jeez, willya take that creepy photo of Karr down from the top of the page, please? I really don’t want to have to look at him every time I come here.

The Boulder DA only announced an arrest after a Denver TV station broke the news about JMK being a suspect. Maybe the DA was backed into a corner by the premature release of this information. And the Thai cops didn’t help things much either. If they hadn’t paraded him in front of the media, might he still be in a Bangkok jail cell awaiting DNA results?

Safran: Just one…I advised a creepy-looking American expatriate in Thailand how to get the most amount of media attention with the least amount of effort. Seems to have worked out.

Yeah…he’s a creep that used tax dollars to get a free trip to back to the state’s but.. let’s look at this from another prospective: he was one day into a new teaching job in Thailand with the responsibility of molding the minds of innocent little children. I think we may have actually saved some little souls from is treachery.
