Couric gets Photoshopped by CBS PR

A tipster to TVNewser revealed two photos with some striking differences. The one on the left is the first official photo of Katie Couric as part of the CBS family. The one on the right is the same photo from the September issue of Watch magazine, which is owned by CBS. “The editorial staff of Watch magazine retouched the photo without the knowledge of Katie Couric or CBS news management,” said a CBS spokesperson. The editorial staff is CBS’ own communications department. When asked about the photo discrepancy, Couric said she prefers the original photo “because there’s more of me to love.”

A celebrity? Photoshopped? This is an outrage! Why, it violates all known standards of –
Puh-leeze. First, the photo on the left is simply a bad image. No one should have been using it; it’s not even properly white-balanced. Second, yes, she’s slimmer in ’shopped image, but not obnoxiously so — judging from the way the jacket looks in the first photo, the wardrobe dept. wasn’t doing her favors with the fit of that suit, either. The image has been cleaned up, and it’s SOP. If you want to be outraged, be outraged with Katie for that prenatural look of surprise she had 4-6 months ago — the telltale sign she’d been indulging in some cosmetic work (although not particularly bad) which would settle in quite naturally for her debut.
If I were CBS, would I want to show my $60 million investment — who’s getting a $10 million promotional push at launch — in the very best light (quite literally)? Yes, I would.

CBS sent our affiliate a raw photo with guidelines on how we are supposed to touch-up the photo in Photoshop. I believe all affils were sent this.

Blame the magazine / publication not the retoucher.
