Watching TV shows on your computer

Cory Bergman August 30th, 2006

Mark Glaser drills down on the relatively new phenomenon of watching TV shows on your computer. “Let’s be clear about one thing. Watching TV shows and movies on computer screens — as they exist today — will not replace watching TV and movies on much bigger screens, in much more comfortable environs,” he writes. Hmmm. I’ll give that to him, for now. While DVRs are efficient for recording shows in advance, streaming TV online is useful for those shows you missed and never intended to record in the first place.

Sure, at home I like to plop down in front of my nice bigscreen HDTV in my Archie Bunker chair. But I spend 10 hours a day in a TV-less (and window-less for that matter) office where I certainly do enjoy being able to watch my free episodes of Lost on Thursday mornings, even when I know the same episode is sitting on my HD-DVR at home.

there’s an interesting comment from a hearst “employee” in that piece.

you have to wonder if the “corporation” feels the same.

how will they react to this: will they view/treat it as a threat???

or the opportunity of our lifetime???

After work the other night I sat down on the couch with laptop in hand and watched a whole evening’s worth of Top Gear clips from YouTube and other video sharing sites.

I work in television, it’s my life. I never turned the TV on once. I didn’t miss it…

Since I missed the first season of ‘Prison Break’ (because I was busy WORKING when it was on) I’ve been catching up with the FOX O&O’s On Demand feature.
But I gotta tell ya, it’s not that comfortable watching a laptop on the couch.

Can’t TiVo already access TV-over-IP? How long before set-top IP devices become standard in living rooms? I can’t imagine long.

Eventually, won’t people just get tv’s that have computer inputs? I got rid of my tv a few months ago in favor of a flat-panel monitor from Dell. I hooked it up to a Tivo and a PC’s DVI output. So far, so good.

ah, I just have images of folks catching up on Lost in between listening to the boss bloviate….

seriously, how many (adult, non-college age, married, living in more than one room) people are really going to watch on their computers at home when they can get the big screen effect? or are their “shows” that important?

who has to watch it on a 15″ screen at home?

as adm mentioned, many tv’s are already equipped to handle the task.

therein lies the killer for time slot tv.

Well I’ll put up my hand. I watch almost all my tv shows on my lap top on the couch in the living room. Once you get used to it its great. I love watching in widescreen HDTV and being able to pause and watching whenever I want to. With the trend toward not having a tv in the living room its also great being able to put away the laptop at will. However I admit it would be nice to be able to watch on the TV when I feel like it. As long as its easy. Maybe through the XBOX 360?

I wouldn’t want to watch all my TV on my computer because there are some shows I like to have on in the background while I surf the internet or IM with friends.
