The Chilling Effect: CBS stations may delay 9/11 doc

Steve Safran August 31st, 2006

Some CBS affiliates are getting cold feet about re-airing the excellent documentary, “9/11″ in its scheduled 9 p.m. slot and are reportedly going to move the show to 10 p.m. to avoid any repercussions from the FCC. (”Indecent” speech is just fine after 10.) 9/11 has aired twice without resulting in fines, but in the $325,000 fine era, stations are simply too worried about FCC’s inscrutable anti-profanity rules. There are swears heard in the program from people on the ground during the chaos who didn’t have the simple courtesy to say “Darn, the buildings are collapsing. Holy moley! Oh shoot, thousands of people are dead. My gosh!”

Another example of an out-of-control FCC.

[...] An update here on the CBS airing of “9/11.” (See our article from earlier this week.) On two of its affiliates, Sinclair Broadcasting is delaying the airing of CBS’s documentary from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 10. There are swears heard in the documentary, which has aired twice without penalty. WGME in Portland, Maine, and KGAN in Cedar Rapids, Iowa are holding off until the “safe harbor” 10 p.m. hour. It’s understandable Sinclair would do this amid FCC irrationality and the hysteria at the Parents Television Council which is protecting the nation’s youth from reality. Young people wishing to learn about that day in our history had better TiVo the show - it’s a school night. [...]
