CBS executive VP Martin Franks says the hesitancy of CBS stations to air the 9/11 documentary next week is “example number one” that the FCC’s indecency laws are chilling free speech rights. So far, about a dozen CBS affiliates have indicated they won’t show the documentary, another dozen say they will delay it until later at night and two dozen others are considering what to do.

“Newspaper industry leaders are frogs in a pot. The water’s starting to boil, and it’s time to jump,” writes Tom Mohr in Editor and Publisher. Mohr, who was the president of Knight-Ridder Digital, puts forward a manifesto for saving newspaper companies by making sweeping changes to their industry. “Only 19 percent of 18-34 year olds read a daily newspaper; 44 percent of them go to a web news portal,” he points out. Mohr outlines a “Marshall Plan” for the papers - and it’s a good one. The question is: will the industry listen, or is it too late?

The big summer viewing audience once again was on the cable nets and not the traditional broadcast nets. Ad-supported cable scored 61% of the primetime viewing audience over the summer, as broadcasters continue to give away three months of effort every year. The half-hearted attempts at original programming from the nets - the reailty shows - did OK. But cable originals took the honors. I’ve never understood the summer rerun mentality. In what other business would you write off 25% of your year?

Australian television personality Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray while filming a segment on the “Ocean’s Deadliest” off the Great Barrier Reef. The stingray’s poisonous barb punctured his heart while he swam above the animal, an event called a “freak accident” by experts. “The footage shows him swimming in the water, the ray stopped and turned and that was it,” said boat owner Peter West, who viewed the footage afterwards. There have been only 17 fatal stingray attacks worldwide.
