Steve Irwin killed by stingray
David Johnson September 4th, 2006
Australian television personality Steve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray while filming a segment on the “Ocean’s Deadliest” off the Great Barrier Reef. The stingray’s poisonous barb punctured his heart while he swam above the animal, an event called a “freak accident” by experts. “The footage shows him swimming in the water, the ray stopped and turned and that was it,” said boat owner Peter West, who viewed the footage afterwards. There have been only 17 fatal stingray attacks worldwide.

I don’t have much to say, apart from the fact that he was the liveliest interview I ever conducted. I hope I still have that tape somewhere…

I always kinda figured that he’d be killed someday by something that really shouldn’t have killed him, given his job. But I thought it might be a traffic accident or something.

that guy’s appeal crossed all demographics; kids of 3 or 4 and kids of 84 had to love him.
a tragic loss.

He was a human being who loved life and animal life. I feel for his wife and young child who will never know now what might have been.
He made Animal Planet into a success and one can hope they take proper notice.

My wife let out a gasp last night while on the computer about 10:30PM. I was watching TV. She just said “Steve Irwin was killed” It took a second to figure out who she was talking about, but I was sincerely saddened by this news. He made a living doing what he loved, and by the sounds of things, it was a freak accident that he died. Although my initial reaction was “it was bound to happen eventually”, I am truly sorry for his loss. Can’t imagine how to break this news to his kids…that’s even more wrenching.

Im an Aussie that lives in the US and My Mum emailed me and told me that its all over the news and she teaches at a High School and kids where crying .Shame to see a bloke like that that employs a good proportion of poeple from the town of Bewah at his Zoo and Keeps the contractors afloat die at such a young age .
I remember as a kid fishing not far from Sydney and hooking stingrays .As soon as you saw you saw you cuaght a stingray it was time to cut the line and lose your hook and sinker .

funny you should mention that…while honeymooning on maui, my wife and i walked the boardwalk at any number of fishing holes. one spot seemed to have quite a crowd. we wandered over to see what it was all about. this guy had a ray on his line that would come to the surface every couple minutes… it was the size of a very small automobile, i swear.
upon seeing the shadow emerge from the depths the collective crowd would let out a gasp!!!
what a beautiful creature it was.
i don’t know if it was just me or not, but the ray looked like he worked for the hawaii board of tourism.

I have been scuba diving three times in my 60 years and yet with that little expericence I once accidently stirred up very big stingray who was resting under the sanding bottom of a West Indies coral reef. They actaully cover themselves in sand. It scarred me to death but when I was ;later told of the odds of getting stuck by the tail I deicded it wasn’t much to worry about. I was right too. the odds are ridiculous and to think Steve Irwin, with all the dumb chances he took would be killed in such a touristy way is surreal. It’s like a gunslinger in the old American West getting killed because his gun went off when he was cleaning it. Or the pilot of a space shuttle falling off the wing and getting killed. Or a war hero getting killed in a car wreck. It’s very unsatifactory isn’t it?

I always liked Steve Irwin. He seemed to be a genuinely good person, teacher, naturalist, and humanitarian, he did a lot to represent those who cannot represent themselves, his beloved animals. He was one of those larger than life personalities that you cannot replace …
We extend our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Terri, daughter Bindi and son Bob Irwin, and to Steve’s Dad Bob as well as to all the members of his staff at the zoo, and to the many friends Steve leaves behind in his passing from this life to the next.
May God Bless and Comfort Steve Irwin’s family and friends. Love knows no boundries … he loved his family dearly, and was just as passionate about his work. He will be greatly missed by everyone who’s heart he has touched, those who have welcomed him into their homes via the television, and by all who have come to understand him throughout his work. We pray his family will be comforted in their loss knowing Steve was doing something that he loved.
Sincerely,
Donald & Violet Hart Family

My husband works late hours, And he caught the news just as it happened. Iawoke at 7 that morning to him telling me your “t.v Boyfriend” died this morning. I cried after my husband explained everything to me. I love animals but I always found the animal shows boring… Until I found Steve’s shows! He made the shows so fun to follow. I feel bad for Terri, Bindi, Bob, and Steve’s father. Who would of ever thought …… Steve was always saying the animals don’t really mean you any harm as long as they don’t fear you. He always seem to be able to read the animals and ready for what ever they were up to. There will never be another like Steve Irwin. Terri and the Children are in my prayers as well as Steve’s father and other mates.

I was deeply upset when I heard the news of Steve Irwin being killed. I felt heart-sick. I have watched his shows since I was very young and wanted someday to be just like him. He was a great man!
Terri, Bob and Bindi Sue; thank you so much for sharing him with us and we have all of you in our prayers. God bless you all!

We are all too complacent about our environment and extinction due to habitat loss. It’s too easy to sit around watching your HD TV in your air conditioned house watching “nice” civilized environmentalist that stay far away from animals telling you how great they live, in the wilderness. What wilderness? Most of those films take place in wilderness preserves.
These animals are dying every day from poachers, from habitat destruction, war and more. There is no time for “nice” shows that lie to us that we will be able to see these animals ever again. The film is all that we will have left if things continue as they have.
When audiences are mislead like that, there is no sense of urgency or shock, they vote to build even more condominiums and vote down preserves. Now that is real harassment of animals, being run over by cars, their food sources destroyed, their livelihood taken away from them.
Steve really wrestled with the problem of conservation, and was dangerously close to the problem ironically, and placed himself in harm’s way to make a point, to make us pay attention.
The alligators in his zoo lived well, bathed in clean water and were better fed than millions of children around the world that are starving today due to environmental devastation and war. These crocks are not really just ambassadors for their own species, educating audiences to assure their survival. They are our own salvation.
Most people don’t see the connection but if a snake or a crocodile cannot survive in today’s world, after 200 millions years on earth, there is certainly no hope for us humans is there?
So Steve Irwin was not shouting to us EXTINCTION WARNING WARNING EXTINCTION – he was warning us of our own demise unless we do something.
Some might think the Stingray got him because he was taking revenge on Steve, but those of us that think there are other forces in nature, of a higher order, might think the Stingray killed him so Steve could make the ultima sacrifice for the sake of our environment and these animals, so we may finally pay attention and take notice. I believe so. We will miss Steve but his message will not die with him.

Reading all the other commets, I wanted to add a that he had a wonderful family that was left behind. Death is a sad thing for those left behind. Steve was a very good person that really cared about wildlife and was out to save it. It is truley a lost to all of us.
This is actually a warning to us that we need to think more about our invironment, people are starting to tread on animals treatory’s we think nothing about cutting down trees for houses, pullting the air, and leaving animals homless with out a place to go and food to eat, then we wonder why they come to citys looking for food and we kill them. I think Steve was trying to show this on filming some of his program, because the title was Ocean’s Deadliest. With the change in Global warming, there have been more attacks on humans latley in the oceans, wildlife will fight back. We need to start paying attention to what is going on here. I think what happend to Steve was a warning to all of us. We better wake up before its to late!

He who was the greatest man , spending time with animals always make the crocodile hunter show so lively. He set a great example to many conservatives to love animals ,they are’nt any harm .He showed great love and care when handling animals , he had the patience and blessing in the animal world. It is like a blessing from above , the first man to ever show that gift that he had recieved to animals .I don’t know how Terri must have felt when she heard the news about Steve but I hope that she will find comfort and to continue doing the good things that she have being doing in the past and wishing her the best . Steve and his family will always be in my prayer.

I don’t have much to say. I can’t say I was the biggest fan of him, but I was hurt to know that this would happen to Steve. Today I was at the S/market and I saw a magazine with the cover saying, “Croc Hunter’s family war: over Bindi” That scared me. Maybe it was because she has her own TV show and the rest don’t. Well, that’s what I think.
