Big day for CBS and CBSNews.com

Cory Bergman September 5th, 2006

Katie Couric and the reworked Evening News debut on CBS tonight along with a live streaming simulcast on CBSNews.com. The simulcast will be available when the newscast airs in each time zone. Also, the new blog “Couric and Co.” has launched. Couric’s first post is about Henry Blogg, an accomplished sailor, who reminded her of a friend’s advice when she was wrestling with the decision to come to CBS. “I was anxious about making a career change,” Couric writes. “But a good friend told me: ‘Katie, a boat is always safe in the harbor. But it’s not what it was built for.’” Also, you can sign up for “Katie Couric’s Notebook,” a podcast. Plus, “Eye to Eye” will feature extended video of interviews with newsmakers. And Couric will host “First Look with Katie Couric,” a preview of some of the stories coming up in the newscast. UPDATE: Just watched “First Look” (the clip cued up on the home page) and Couric introduces us to the show producing staff of Evening News. “So, Mr. EP man, what’s the lead story?” Couric asks Rome Hartman, the executive producer, who explains it will be Lara Logan in Afghanistan. The clip was over 6 minutes long and gave a rather healthy tease to tonight’s broadcast.

    Does anyone really care?

I mean the big broadcast days are numbered and the viability of the concept regarding an ‘Anchor news person’ is approaching its last breath. I predict in as little as 2-5 years, broadcast TV will have lost another big share. The market continues to fragment and the techno teen is growing up.

At last count - 76 comments on her blog. I’d say someone cares, indeed.

I wanted to “say”" a HUGE HOORAH for Katie Couric’s presentation last night. I am a product of a “broken home” & I grew up with my momma, so , TO ME, a female voice IS “the voice of God”. And I wanted to give my idea for her sign off: just look in the camera
    & say “live on”…
Thank ya’ll, great job Ms Couric & “live on”,

Katie you’re equal to the task, just flash that great smile as you sign off for the day…we’ll be back, ’cause we love you. You’ve had to face a lot of life’s trials and won. I’m in your corner with lots of others. (I’m an 83 yr. old widow).

I would like to submit (as a signoff phrase) for Katie to use at the end of her broadcast the following: “May the good news be yours!”
