Amazon unboxes video download store
Cory Bergman September 7th, 2006
As expected, Amazon.com has launched “Amazon Unbox,” a movie and TV show download site with a respectable content selection out of the gate. There are TV shows from CBS, Fox, MTV, VH1, HGTV, Comedy Central and more (original Star Trek episodes are available for download for the first time). And movies from 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. TV shows go for $1.99 each, and movies run between $7.98 and $19.99. Or you can rent movies, like Office Space, for as low as $2.99. To celebrate the launch, Amazon is offering a $1.99 rebate on all purchases, meaning users can download their first TV show for free. It looks like a solid product, but I haven’t put it through it’s paces yet. Post in comments if you’ve given it a try…

I purchased a movie last night. You can start watching the movie whiles it downloads. Or, wait until it’s entirely downloaded in about 30 minutes and it appeared to be less choppy. The quality was solid and the full screen option maintained the same quality as the small screen.
Their list of portable devices available for transfer was slim.

[...] As expected, iTunes will take the wraps off a movie store in a much-anticipated announcement today. The launch has been long in coming, as Steve Jobs has not had an easy job negotiating pricing with the studios. Initially, Jobs wanted to cap download prices at $9.99, but he relented to $14.99. Still, that number is less than the wholesale rate of $17 that WalMart pays for its DVDs. So iTunes is expected to launch with movies from Disney (Jobs sits on the board) and Lionsgate Films. Last week Amazon debuted its music store with downloads that run as high as $19.99, which may explain why the company was able to secure partnerships with heavyweights 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. As far as today’s announcement, while the movie store is a given, it’s unclear what else Jobs will unveil. There’s a rumor that he’ll also debut a widescreen video iPod, but we’ll have to wait and see. (Press event is at 10 a.m. Pacific.) [...]
