Local Fox reporter attacked while covering story

Steve Safran September 7th, 2006

Whoa. Reporter John Mattes of Fox 6 News in San Diego was attacked while covering a suspected real estate scam. Mattes suffered cracked ribs and other injuries. His cameraman kept rolling…

Photogs: Would you have put the camera down, or kept shooting?

That’s great footage, but I think I would have backed up the reporter in this case.

I’m not a news “insider,” but what I’ve seen over the years is that the photographers keep rolling no matter what happens. Apparently the attacker’s wife was saying that she was going to get “the gun,” and I bet the photog would have kept rolling for the “great footage” while the reporter got shot.

    Keep rolling.
    A record must be kept.
After a certain point it’s for the lawyers and the police.

That’s right. It’s not about getting great footage in a situation like this. At this point the photog was no longer shooting a news story. He was providing documented proof of a crime.

    BEST comment over on YouTube:

    “You stay classy, San Diego.”

Nice, this youtube user stole my station’s content.

We still got tons of video views at our fox6.com site anyway, but it still makes us angry about it.

    Crisis communication training anyone?

I think that the camerman was calling the police, what a steady hand though. I am glad the reporter is okay.

The first things news managers will tell you to do if you’re assaulted is to keep rolling. That way there’s irrefutable evidence of just what when down before the authorities arrive. It’s wise enough advice, but I still think I’d have a hard time stepping back for a wide shot if my partner of the day were suddenly being pummelled. (Well, there was that one guy I wouldn’t mind seeing take a punch. Or three.) Hey, I’m no gladiator, but I am a Southern man who grew up with brothers. Staying out of the fray ain’t exactly in my DNA. Luckily, the kind of stories I tend to cover don’t feature alot of fisticuffs. Let’s just say you won’t find too many enraged combatants down at band camp. Until the triangle players show up, that is. Those guys are vicious!

New Zealand channel TV3 (www.tv3.co.nz) got in trouble years ago, for shooting a car which slid on a snow-covered road and went into a ditch. The driver got out of the car and verbally abused the cameraman for recording, and not helping them. He just explained he was doing his job.

It’s hard to say we’d do the same thing in any given situation. In this situation I’d have done the same because the interviewee was handling the situation.

If he would have set the camera down, rolling or not, that crazy woman might have picked it up and taken off with the evidence. I wouldn’t have taken that chance.

Without the 3rd party there to help I would have likely held on to camera and jumped in to help my partner depending on my intuition of his ability to defend himself.

Also, these guys knew they were dealing with an element that could get violent, so they may have had a “plan” or understanding of what to do ”if”, for certain situations.

I’ve certainly had those “If” conversations before.

It was not the sound man who helped the reporter.
The guy who helped was there being interviewed because, he, too, had been defrauded by that horrific attacking couple, according to the reporter.

If I was the reporter and she slaps me in the face like that, I would have punched the f—ing b—- out. I would have been more aggressive in beating the s— out of her husband.

This is one of those situations that regardless of market size that a third hand should be on-hand. A producer, or even an intern, just a third face as there is always–always–strength in numbers. Now, the trouble is I realize the nature of the interivew initially was not confrontational as it was with someone else, but it would appear it was being conducted on those people’s property which was perhaps a mistake. Also, when the water came out, the 911 calling should perhaps have happened then only because the woman was so clearly unstable at the time it seemed there was no telling to what lengths she might go.

The photog did keep rolling, which while painful was the best move for court purposes, and it would also appear he sat on the guy until the cops came.

I like how the reporter remained so civil to the woman, I guess because he knew the camera was still rolling. The suspect reminds me of the kids I used to teach: when they get caught doing something bad, they always figure out a way to make it worse, even when you’re standing there telling them, “Don’t make it worse.”

Mike (comment #7), if you would like people not to “steal” your video, then put it on YouTube yourself. Or make it easy for people to embed content from your site on their site. Also, as I write this, the whole Fox6.com website appears to be down, so it’s a good thing that it’s on YouTube, where people can actually see this content, and say to themselves, “Wow, Fox6 has some really interesting stories…I should watch it more often or check out their website.”

About 10 years ago, I did a workshop for reporters, producers and photogs on how and WHEN to defend yourself in a situation like this. It was an adaptation of a rape prevention/self-defense course that I’ve taught for years. Looks like I’m going to have to revive it.

Here’s my “blow-by-blow” on how the good guys could have responded better. When the woman slapped the reporter, she should have gone to the ground with a face full of pepper spray. When she grabbed the camera, the photog should have picked a kneecap and crushed it with the ball of his foot. When hubby came at the reporter, he also should have been spitting up pepper spray. The reporter’s response to the hit to the face should have been to grab behind the husband’s knee (the reporter was bent over after the hit) jerk forward and lift up, dropping hubby on his back/head and probably knocking him out. When the hubby got the reporter in the pseudo-chokehold, the reporter should have started elbowing him in the ribs as hard and fast as possible. The interviewee who stepped in should have grabbed hubby’s HEAD, not his neck and then twisted and pulled down. Wherever the head goes, the body WILL follow. Another option would have been for the interviewee to have immediately started punching the husband on the side of his neck… (It’s called a “brachial stun” and it knocks most people out!) …or the back of his head. When the wife started trying to kick the reporter, the photog could have easily kicked the back of her leg, taking her to the ground, or kicked her hip, sending her over the landscaping and onto her posterior. Again, this would have been the perfect time for pepper spray. When she said she was going to get a gun, that’s when the photog should have dropped the camera and then her. One easy way would be to grab a handful of that ponytail and take it to the ground. Again, where the head goes, the body will follow. When she said “gun” all bets were off. That’s when she would have been very surprised to learn that a member of the media is a former cop, a life member of the NRA and a concealed carry permit holder, had I been there.

The simple fact is, if the interviewee had not stepped in, this reporter would be in intensive care right now, if not dead. Everyone in this profession needs to know how to defend against this kind of attack in a way that will not only prevent injury to yourself, but also teach the attacker (and everyone watching) a lesson.

I tell every reporter/producer/photog I know who does investigative work or covers politicians: If you’re not AT LEAST carrying pepper spray and something that can be used as an impact weapon (a Shure RE-50 mic with a wireless pack works WONDERFULLY!) you are ASKING to be injured or killed.

We have to send a message that the public will hear loud and clear: We are just doing our jobs. This is not personal. If you make it personal, you will go to jail. If you put your hands on me, or my equipment, you will go to jail after you are released from the hospital. No exceptions!

Anyone interested in the training, email me. I may just do the class again for my co-workers and VT it for a DVD or something like that.

Jeff J. a.k.a. “Cop Turned Journalist”

P.S. Please save the “but my news director won’t let me carry a weapon,” “our station has a policy against fighting back if we’re attacked…” and “if I do the things you said, I’ll get sued…” whining for someone who cares. Your news director will be sitting in his air conditioned office while some scumbag is putting his fingers in your eyeballs, your station policy will not feed your family when you can no longer work and dead people don’t get sued. To add insult to injury, the station’s lawyer won’t even come to your funeral. NO ONE has the right to attack you for doing your job and NO ONE has the right - morally OR legally - to forbid you to defend yourself if you are attacked. -jj-
