MSNBC.com launches new politics section

Cory Bergman September 7th, 2006

Through a new partnership with the National Journal publications, MSNBC.com has launched a new politics section with some intriguing features. The section uses a wider, photo-heavy layout with a list of headlines that’s sortable by importance, date, source or title. Click the plus sign to preview a story in the page (mmmm Ajax.) Click on the “key races” tab and you’re taken to a draggable Virtual Earth map with rollover markers. And message boards are coming soon. Adds Rex from MSNBC.com in comments, “There are several experiments on here, some of which might stick and some of which might not. People will immediately notice the big visual grid, but one small idea is the ‘importance’ indicator, which is one of the interesting ideas we’re toying with.” Screen grab…

The first thing I’ve worked on that’s live!

There are several experiments on here, some of which might stick and some of which might not. People will immediately notice the big visual grid, but one small idea is the “importance” indicator, which is one of the interesting ideas we’re toying with.

It looks fantastic. Could this be a preview of the next iteration of msnbc.com itself?

and the concorde didn’t work on coal. and the first iteration of abcnews.com didn’t work on 14.4.

live at the fring if you will and suffer for it. sorry but the majority does rule.

am standing by now to be flamed, but i get that mass technology is just that; for the mass. period.

The majority may rule, but there are those of us who believe that websites should be accessible to everyone, no matter which browser they’re using.

What that means is that Rex and company need to check the site themselves using Safari (if possible) and try to either fix the problem(s) or provide alternative functionality that kicks in automatically.

(Rox, if it’s any help, I just checked the site in Opera and there are issues there, as well, specifically with the headlines/video/key races tabs and the map. I could be wrong, but I’m guessing the same thing is happening in Safari.)
