Lonelygirl15 'creators' admit it’s a hoax
Cory Bergman September 10th, 2006
As many suspected, the young YouTube phenomenon known as lonelygirl15 has all been fake, according to an admission posted by “The Creators” just a day after a story revealed a connection to a Hollywood agency. “Thank you so much for enjoying our show so far,” the admission begins. “With your help we believe we are witnessing the birth of a new art form.” The post on the lonelygirl15 forum explains they are filmmakers that “aren’t a big corporation.” As for Bree, the young “homeschooled” girl, the filmmakers would only say this about her identity: “Lonelygirl15 is a reflection of everyone. She is no more real or fictitious than the portions of our personalities that we choose to show (or hide) when we interact with the people around us.” Yeah, ok, thank you. While I admit the whole sordid affair was quite brilliant, the news guy in me doesn’t like the idea of being lied to in the name of art. But I’m sure others will have a different take…

Alas, now my dreams of sweeping lonelygirl15 into my arms and whisking her away for use in my own internet scam are…vanquished. It’s time for me to wake up.

A “new art form?” If pranks are art, I’m frickin’ Picasso.

Picasso Safran aside..can we dig up all the posts from all the LRers who were going to their graves believing it was REAL REAL REAL and get at least one, to quote our resident Picacso, frickin’ mea culpa from at least one of them.
Or is there also an art form in being had and wrong?

I say, more power to those folks who created “Bree.” I’ve been watching the story unravel and had suspected it was a hoax, though not a big corporation.
I think they used the new media well to gain a fan base. Bravo, guys!

But hang on, does that email supposedly from the creators look very real to you? I mean, if it was REALLY from the creators, would they just post it on a board like that? Not very authoritative, to be honest.
On the other hand, seems like a cool trick to announce that you created Lonelygirl15, eh? Whether you did or not…

Is it really a prank? I mean, when you watch Lost on TV, there’s not a disclaimer that says “This is fake” before the show starts. You assume it. No one ever said this was real. We just assumed it. Or we didn’t…

It isn’t a prank, moron.
It’s reality TV.
Or in this case, reality Blogging…?
Yeah.
Whatever.
But it’s a VERY cool idea to make a television show on youtube.
And Jessica is a great actress.
