Universal Music hints at YouTube lawsuit

Steve Safran September 14th, 2006

Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris stopped short of announcing a lawsuit against YouTube and MySpace at an investors’ conference on Monday - but he’s hinting, big time. “We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars. How we deal with these companies will be revealed shortly.” That’s either a strongarm negotiating tactic, or a badly veiled lawsuit threat. Partner with social networking sites - don’t sue them out of existence.

Who isn’t a copyright infringer these days?

Music companies have learned nothing over
the past 10 years. It’s incredible.
Here they had this fantastic opportunity to sell
and connect directly to consumers one on one
with the internet and instead fought it tooth and nail.
Still do, only now it’s, heaven forbid, with a company
that pulled their ass out of a deep hole and is now
making music fun again (Apple). But the record
companies don’t like the “control” of a a company
that people like. They themselves will never
have that problem, that’s for sure.

The middleman record company is dying fast.
What we will have are marketing companies
to help bands and performers. Bands will be
    partners instead of slaves. Bands
will build up their business just like any other
business, one product (record) at a time.
Some clubs, some records, some t-shirts,
etc. The idea that bands need record
companies anymore is stupid. They were only
    needed for distribution. HELLO !

[...] While Universal Music is threatening to sue, Warner Music has teamed up with YouTube in a revenue-sharing deal. Whenever someone uploads a video with a Warner Music song playing in the background, new software on YouTube recognizes it. Warner can choose to accept or deny it. If accepted, whenever the clip is played, ads served along the side are rev-shared between YouTube and Warner. In effect, this means that Warner is extending a license to anyone who uploads their music. “We are very excited,” YouTube co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley said. “This is a real landmark for our company.” YouTube is hoping the deal will serve as a springboard for similar media alliances to come. “Technology is changing entertainment, and Warner Music is embracing that innovation,” said Warner Music Chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. “Consumer-empowering destinations like YouTube have created a two-way dialogue that will transform entertainment and media forever.” [...]

Music wise I am sure there are lots of bands who dont object to their videos being on YouTube. After all music videos are just adverts to get people to buy the proper cds and dvds anyway. These videos are so low quality they are in fact just serving as adverts and samplers to get people to go out and buy the the real thing.YouTube are in fact actually doing the movie and music industry a favour by making them readily available

[...] First, Universal Music threatened to sue YouTube. Then, Universal teamed up with YouTube. Now, a week later, Universal sues Grouper and Bolt for allowing users to upload and share music videos. The lawsuit asks for as much as $150,000 for each incident of copyright infringement. Yeah, right. [...]
