Movie downloads: close, but no pirate-buster

Posted by Steve Safran on September 17, 2006

With all the recent announcements of companies getting into the movie download business, you’d think someone would get it right. There are two things we want: the option to “rent” and the option to own via burning to a DVD. The price should be less than a DVD in stores because there is no production cost, no shipping cost and no retail markup. So far, so disappointing. Hollywood continues to lag rather than lead. And users continue to steal because they have to.

“steal because they have to” ?
    Come on.
Nobody HAS TO watch a movie.

I agree with the rest of what you said.

It was easier to coin than “People will steal when music labels, movie studios and TV networks make it far too inconvenient or downright impossible for them to seek a legitimate means by which to download and view or listen at their convenience, in the manner they see fit, in a way that pirated video already allows.”

Most towns, no matter how small have at least one or two video rental places and they generally distribute DVD-quality films. I believe these portable little disks allow you to view your selection on pretty much any device, with the possible exception of Apple’s attempt to build their own monopoly.

As far as I’m concerned and I’ve never obtained any pirated music or video, but the handy little disks which are available throughout the nation are all the rage. Though, you still can’t get really obscure art films in BFE and that’s the main reason that I’m keeping my eye on the download industry. Occasionlly there is something that you don’t want to wait for your next visit to a city, where your Blockbuster card will work, but those titles are few and far between, plus now you can get them through the mail. (Though, I don’t want to join any clubs. My local video dealer, a neighbor and a friend would prefer that I don’t obligate myself to a big company for $19.95 a month.)

Heck, I know a local place that shows these films in better-than-DVD quality right on a giant screen in a theater setting.

The business is changing to an on-demand world, with or without studio cooperation. Yet they still act as though those who want their product most are the theives. That’s my point. You can either stick to your old model or adapt with the technology.
