Al Gore’s cable channel has teamed with Yahoo in a new partnership designed to generate more video submissions to CurrentTV while providing Yahoo with some original video content. The two companies will collaborate on four video channels on Yahoo and Current TV: Yahoo Current Buzz (what’s hot), Yahoo Current Action (sports), Yahoo Current Drive (cars) and Yahoo Current Traveler. Of note, Madeleine Smithberg, the co-creator and former executive producer of The Daily Show , is producing the Buzz channel. One of the first clips in the partnership, posted in Yahoo Current Traveler, is a clip directed by none other than Bono himself, “A Day in the Life of The Edge.” So why did Yahoo partner up with Current as opposed to all those other user-video sites out there? “Current focuses on original content that isn’t just ripped from other sites,” said Yahoo’s vice president of social media Jason Zajac.

Cingular Wireless has been dipping a toe into VOD advertising, and so far it’s finding promising results. In the first two months of a big VOD ad campaign, the company got more than 17 million views. They were even overdelivered by 36%. Although the numbers are small by TV standards, the company says it’s impressed. “We are very bullish on the growth of VOD. VOD is still a small portion of Cingular’s advertising budget, but it has a “big-time future,” said Vance Overbey, executive director of advertising for Cingular.

LG is coming out with a line of flatscreen TVs with built-in DVRs. LG is calling the line its “Time Machine” TVs, which is kind of cute. (I was hoping for a TV that could show me the NBC Thursday night lineup from 1984 or so, but this isn’t bad.) So - will built-in DVRs out-TiVo TiVo? Will they be better than the near-universally-hated cable box DVRs? Or is all this made irrelevant by VOD? Ah, this is why I love convergence.

What a mess. The publisher of the Los Angeles Times is refusing to comply with Chicago HQ’s request for job cutbacks at the Times. There are currently 940 employees in the editorial division, down 200 from five years ago, and the Times says any further cuts would be too damaging to its quality of journalism. It’s an outright rebellion. There are offers to buy the LA Times from local businessmen, but so far Tribune says the paper’s not for sale. Tribune holds a board meeting Thursday that could be big - it may decide whether to break up the company.

Speaking at an investors conference, Yahoo CEO Terry Semel said while advertising revenue is continuing to grow, “they’re not growing as quickly as we might have hoped at this point in time.” Later in the day, Yahoo’s stock fell 11 percent.

The NY Post ran a story that reported on rumors that a deal is brewing between Sirius and Citadel Broadcasting to return Howard Stern to traditional radio airwaves. But Sirius is denying the report. “There has never been any discussion of Howard Stern in any way, shape, or form being anything but exclusive to Sirius. Published reports suggesting otherwise are wrong,” said Sirius spokesman Patrick Reilly. (Thanks, JIB!)

Less than a week after its launch, the movie store on iTunes has sold 125,000 Disney movies for approximately $1 million in incremental revenue, says Disney CEO Bob Iger. “We’re extremely confident that we’ll easily be able to generate about $50 million in incremental revenue in the first year putting movies on this platform — at no marketing expense to us and very limited additional expense at all, the cost really of encoding the film,” he said. Ah, gotta love the long tail.

It’s been eight years of preaching convergence here, and the changes just in the last several months finally have us heaving a sigh of relief. Hearing “it will never happen” for this long can make it tough to stick to your beliefs. Now there are so many convergence developments that it’s time to put them into context and look at exactly how your business and your life as a communications consumer is changing. Read on…

Reporter Dave Conti of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review took to the streets to test the city’s new WiFi system. Conti had no problems, saying “getting started was a snap.” You get two hours a day of free WiFi, or all-you-can-eat for $14.95 a month or $119.99 a year. Some other nice touches from the Tribune-Review’s online article: a PDF map of the coverage area and instructions on how to connect. Now, if Steelers fans can have this, why can’t we Patriots fans?
