LG introduces TV with built-in ‘Time Machine’

Steve Safran September 19th, 2006

LG is coming out with a line of flatscreen TVs with built-in DVRs. LG is calling the line its “Time Machine” TVs, which is kind of cute. (I was hoping for a TV that could show me the NBC Thursday night lineup from 1984 or so, but this isn’t bad.) So - will built-in DVRs out-TiVo TiVo? Will they be better than the near-universally-hated cable box DVRs? Or is all this made irrelevant by VOD? Ah, this is why I love convergence.

Built in devices are nice, especially in wall mountable TVs where space for components may not be available. I think the clock is ticking for personal DVRs though. It just makes so much more sense to stream things either from the cable company or the Internet.

Anybody heard anything recently about the legal status of cable’s initial forays into centrally managed DVR service? The last I heard the networks were rattling their sabres.
