Pittsburgh’s free WiFi passes the test
Steve Safran September 19th, 2006
Reporter Dave Conti of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review took to the streets to test the city’s new WiFi system. Conti had no problems, saying “getting started was a snap.” You get two hours a day of free WiFi, or all-you-can-eat for $14.95 a month or $119.99 a year. Some other nice touches from the Tribune-Review’s online article: a PDF map of the coverage area and instructions on how to connect. Now, if Steelers fans can have this, why can’t we Patriots fans? If I’m reading the map right, Steelers fans don’t get it unless they’re in the parking lots. But Pirate fans do.
I like it. Cincinnati has a pretty good Wi-Fi system downtown, but CincyBell requires you to have a broadband account to have access, generally.
Move this into the suburbs!

Meanwhile, here in Oakland County Michigan, which was supposed to have free wifi in seven test cities by now, is having trouble. The company wiring the network across the company is having problems securing rights to attach nodes to utility poles. A section of the city of Troy, where I work and live, was supposed to be up and running a few months ago, but I’ve heard nothing. Quite disappointing.

let’s see, who owns the utility poles???
would they have anything to gain from keeping that service from going active???
L. Brooks has said the entire county will be wi-fi wall-to-wall and i believe him.
in case you are wondering, L. Brooks is the county executive, and oakland county is michigan’s wealthiest.

“in case you are wondering” was meant for the ten’s of thousands of daily lostremote readers that might not be from this neck of the woods.
not you, jeff.
sorry.

No offense taken, detroitchannel. Here, I’ll bang the LostRemote “Keep it local” drum for a comment longer.
I know it will happen - the county website says pilot areas up by Fall 06 and entire county by end of 07. Why would utilities keep it from going active? Well, let’s see - cable companies are already up there providing broadband. Electric companies may get into that business soon too through the power lines. But why prevent the WiFi network? The free speed is only 128 kps and doesn’t qualify as broadband, so I don’t have an answer.
I still think the companies constructing the network has been simply overwhelmed by the project. 910 square miles is a lot of ground to cover.
