The revolt at the Los Angeles Times

Steve Safran September 19th, 2006

What a mess. The publisher of the Los Angeles Times is refusing to comply with Chicago HQ’s request for job cutbacks at the Times. There are currently 940 employees in the editorial division, down 200 from five years ago, and the Times says any further cuts would be too damaging to its quality of journalism. It’s an outright rebellion. There are offers to buy the LA Times from local businessmen, but so far Tribune says the paper’s not for sale. Tribune holds a board meeting Thursday that could be big - it may decide whether to break up the company.
