Do we need .mobi domains?
Cory Bergman September 25th, 2006
The new .mobi domains open up for general sale on Tuesday after companies were given the opportunity to lock in their trademarks. The new domain names — marketed to be the .com of mobile accessed content — are backed by Microsoft, Nokia and Vodaphone. But just like .tv, do we really need .mobi? Verizon says it doesn’t see any “business need,” but the company registered verizon.mobi to make sure nobody else takes it. “What we would not want to happen is for this name to be an infringer’s paradise,” said Sarah Deutsch, associate general counsel for Verizon. “Most of the new domain names have been failures and the vast majority of valuable real estate still rests in .com.” I agree, and it’s frustrating that domain registration has become a defensive move. Plus, most .com sites are now optimized for mobile, so why push people to another domain name?

The reason TLDs (Top level domains like .tv and .mobi) are being used is becuase later on down the road, we will run out of .com addresses. I’m starting to see this becuase when I started a website, the .com address was taken by a linkfarmer (website filled by Google Adsense); so I had to settle for a .tv address.

At $500 a pop this was a ripoff - no one will use them. You can count on one hand the number of successful .nets, .tvs, or anything else. If it’s not .com, then stay away.

How many people, do you suppose, upon hearing the name will go to .MOBY instead?
A clear case of thinking like techs, not like users.

it is true that the most popular TLD is .com but that is because it was the first and only one offered (i think). Also, there are quite a few .org’s / .net’s in the Top 100, but I do not see .mobi or any other making an impact in the near future.

Let’s be clear that .tv was not created to be a television related TLD. It is the domain assigned to the nation of Tuvalu (who saw the opportunity inherent therein). Ultimately, it’s no different than .ca, .uk or .ru
