Gmail down?

Stephen Warley September 26th, 2006

Safran and I have been unable to log into our Gmail accounts since 8:30amEST today. We’ve tried doing Google searches for any known issues and have called Google directly. No answers. We can’t even launch the Contact page on Google! Anyone else experiencing similar problems? You would think Google could post some sort of announcement on its website. Whether we like it or not, we are all in the customer service business now. Even you Google! Update: After some more digging, I’m fairly certain this problem is native to Boston Comcast customers and apparently, I’m not the only one wringing my hands. I contacted Comcast and they were less than helpful shall we say. Maybe if enough of us call they will do some investigating.

Google is down for me as well, since about 8am (Boston).

Must be a major issue for some as I’ve nevery experience this level of trouble with Google before…

    From Bostonist.com

It appears that there is a disconnect between Google and Comcast going on right now (breaking news?). We’ve gotten a number of field reports from users of Comcast’s cable internet service across the state who are unable to connect to Gmail, Google, and Blogspot. One of our “internet outage spotters” chronicled a tech support conversation he had in which the Comcast operator told him it was a Firefox issue and he’d have to switch to IE. Apparently Comcast won’t support Firefox as a browser, and if the user is requesting technical assistance it’s only for IE browser questions. Another rep. indicated that the issue was with Google. Though it seems IE browsers can connect to Google, but not personalized pages or GMail, Firefox running on the same Comcast connected machine won’t even connect to those.

We don’t claim to have the technical knowledge to debunk either of these claims for sure – we do know that this post is going up using the Firefox connection we’re using which does not rely on Comcast for anything. Connections are freely made to blogspot, google, and gmail using non-Comcast based internet connections, or IE on Comcast. While we’d like to blame the cable operator for the problems here, perhaps this could be a grudge held by Google. Is Google expressing a vendetta against Comcast for not supporting the opensource software?

There is no indication when this problem will clear up. Comcast might not have anyone working on the issue – they report they need a critical number of calls to classify the issue as a “problem.” Totally Comcastic!

Update: YouTube is reportedly unavailable in the Comcast Firefox fiasco as well. No embedded videos on sites and no homepage connectivity.

Lame. Ah, can’t wait for the end to Net Neutrality!

BTW, been working all day here in NYC…

Spoke with high-level techs (well beyond customer service) at Comcast. They know nothing.

  • 11. Stephen Warley  |  September 26th, 2006 at 10:15 am

rrsafety . .. sounds like the same conversation I had! Treated me like an iodiot. I’ve tried everything else and it’s too much fo a coincidence that only Comcast customers are having this problem. Lets keep the pressure on them. If they receive enough calls they’ll have to do something about it!

Definitely a problem here. I have filed a ticket with Comcast (I’m a customer) so let’s see if they write back.

Problems here. I am in Boston. Called Comcast @1:00p. They said they were aware of the problem and working on it. No ETA.

The funny thing is that I can access Google stuff fine if I VPN into the office. So this *shows* this is comcast.

This is the first time I have a problem like this with Comcast. I hope this is the last, because I don’t intend to stay with morrons who can’t figure stuff out like that.

No ability to use gmail here either, in Brookline, MA. Our office uses Comcast. I talked to a friend who works in Norwood. No problems for her accessing gmail, but I don’t think her office has comcast as ISP.

Here gmail hasn’t worked all day, and it’s even difficult to get onto google.com itself using firefox (though I do have some ability to get on via IE).

I’m in Israel, having trouble with gmail for a week already. Takes 20 tries to get in

  • 18. Z  |  December 23rd, 2006 at 8:36 pm

For weeks I cannot access my gmail via Comcast and it is not just on Firefox, the same thing happens with Safari. I am in San Francisco, CA. Once in a blue I am able to get on but it is 99.99% miss than hit. Frustrating!!!!

  • 19. David  |  December 31st, 2006 at 9:23 pm

Can’t send via gmail from Israel for a few days. Using Bezek Benleumi. Both IE and Firefox are having the problem. Can often get on to read emails and am receiving new ones, but can’t send. Just sits there with a “Sending” message but nothing happens. Eventually times out.
