WKYC reporter slammed by Daily Show

Cory Bergman September 30th, 2006

Friday night, The Daily Show turned the tables on Carl Monday, WKYC-TV “investigative reporter” who produced a six-part, 22-minute investigative series on a young guy he caught masturbating at a public library computer. It’s local TV news at its worst…

Well, turns out WKYC and Carl Monday aren’t hiding the fact they’ve been rightfully disgraced on national television. It’s posted on WKYC’s home page, and Monday is blogging about it. “Remember, this is Comedy Central so don’t take it too seriously, folks,” he blogs. Yeah, and what about that quote from Tom Rosenstiel, Project for Excellence in Journalism? “Carl’s wrong. He’s made a mockery of what investigative journalism is supposed to be.” I can’t agree more, and I hope local newsrooms take notice. Safran says in comments, “It usually takes a plane crash for the airline industry to take action. Maybe this is the crash.”

Carl Monday is a complete joke. He once did an I-Team report at WJW on people being shorted when they bought corded wood. It was a lame story.

Did he have his seatbelt on in the Daily Show piece? If not, does OH have a seatbelt law?

Well, all I can say is this isn’t unique to Ohio. Opie and Anthony (my favorite radio show) regularly run news teases on their show. Teases that go something like, “How a loophole in the sex offender law could shut down religion.” (no kidding, that’s an actual quote).

There’s a very low signal to noise ratio in local news these days.

It was one of the better pieces from the Daily Show in a while…

    You jackin’ it?

There were probably some very high-level heated discussions about this situation Friday at Gannett headquarters in McLean. They will probably continue on Monday. This is not the kind of publicity Gannett wants for its stations. They REALLY cannot stomach this kind of thing.

yet they employ this jackass anyway, and what about
the news director? Why didn’t he say no to the piece?
They are both employed by the company you say
“can’t stomach” this sort of thing. Sounds like
bad management from the top on down to me.

You should watch the raw video that the station posted on their website of the interaction between the “correspondent” and Monday. It’s shocking how horrible the daily show guy is. Kudos to the editors and writers for making the piece hilarious.

Wow, no kidding. “What was your last name?” Unbelievable.

I’m glad Gannett is addressing this in a meeting. However, If I were running the meeting, I don’t think I’d make it past “This was a six-part report” before taking action.

It usually takes a plane crash for the airline industry to take action. Maybe this is the crash.

Thank God for the Daily Show. Carl Monday is an embarrassment. The same for the News Director.

My guess is Jason Jones asked Carl Monday “What’s your last name?” because Monday is not really his last name.

Jason Jones was playing the part of the puppy-eyed admirer. Of course he was terrible. I enjoyed Jason in the confrontation, he stayed on target with the whole Carl Monday you are an A-hole thing.

Opie and Anthony ??? What the???? Vinny, you are comparing a couple of disgraced profane shock jocks to a genuine investigative journalist. You have got to be kidding!

Do you people think the clowns at the Daily Show are real reporters too?

  • 16. Vinny  |  October 29th, 2006 at 8:08 pm

Dose of reality, you are truly an idiot.

Opie and Anthony run the news teases the media runs and then make fun of them.
