Fox on Demand debuts on MySpace, local sites
Cory Bergman October 3rd, 2006
In a move to sustain interest in its fall shows during the Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series, Fox has debuted Fox on Demand, a free streaming showcase on MySpace and 24 owned-and-operated station sites (as we’ve reported, the Fox sites have already been streaming a handful of primetime shows). At launch, available shows (repeats) include Bones, Prison Break, Standoff, Vanished, Justice and more, with additional shows coming later in the season. Streaming is sponsored by Toyota, Burger King and Lionsgate Films. The “Fox Full Throttle” player requires a quick download, and Fox says it delivers a “high definition quality” viewing experience. While I think the idea of offering shows online is a good idea anyway, the move to keep viewers engaged during the confusing programming weeks of the MLB postseason is a smart idea. Now the next step is to produce new shows just for the web.

PRESS RELEASE — Fox Broadcasting, Fox Interactive Media and Fox Television Stations Group today launched FOX on Demand, a groundbreaking endeavor bringing full episodes of FOX primetime television series from the new fall season to millions of fans on an ad-supported basis through MySpace.com and the MyFoxLocal web sites, in 24 owned and operated markets. In an industry first, Fox Interactive Media is leveraging both national and local online distribution channels to sustain enthusiasm for fall primetime programming while the network broadcasts Major League Baseball play-offs and the World Series games.
Beginning today, consumers can access previously-aired episodes from FOX’s returning hits and new fall primetime series, including “Bones,” “Prison Break,” “Standoff,” “Vanished,” “Talk Show With Spike Feresten,” “’Til Death,” “The Loop” and “Justice.” Additional episodes of these and other FOX shows will be made available throughout October and November. On-air promotions during MLB broadcasts will push viewers to the sites to catch up on their favorite FOX shows through FOX on Demand.
“We’re fortunate to have partners like Fox Interactive Media and our Fox Stations Group making our entertainment programming available to viewers, while we turn over much of prime time to Fox Sports and post-season baseball,” said Peter Liguori, President of Entertainment for FOX. “MySpace provides tremendous exposure to our key demos and our O&O’s speak to local viewers and loyal fans of FOX in a very targeted way.”
The launch of ad-supported streaming of FOX programming will support several strategic objectives, including building audiences during breaks in regular programming by utilizing an alternative distribution channel; demonstrating the value of online promotions to stations and advertisers; and allowing parallel entertainment offerings to grow audiences simultaneously.
“Offering free access to FOX programming online during the MLB primetime take-over demonstrates the tremendous value that may be realized through a smart digital distribution strategy for premium content,” said Peter Levinsohn, President, Digital Media, Fox Entertainment Group. “The FIM network of sites and particularly MySpace, combined with our local television sites, provide the optimal platform for maintaining momentum with our existing audience and also attracting new viewers.”
“This is a significant step in our evolution as a next generation media company,” said FIM President Ross Levinsohn. “Leveraging this unique opportunity with our sister company FOX enables us to experiment and innovate, and deliver some of the most compelling video experiences online to consumers. We look forward to expanding this opportunity to other content owners and applaud our premiere sponsors for supporting this important endeavor.”
FOX On Demand is available now on MySpace.com (http://www.myspace.com/fox) and on MyFoxLocal station sites in 24 markets across the country. Viewers will be able to stream each of the shows in high-definition streaming (over one gigabyte per second) video using the FOX Full Throttle video player. The player, delivered by Fox Interactive Media, offers a high-definition quality viewing experience.

The quality is very good. I balked at the download, but it is quick and painless (on a PC, anyway.) The video experience is very good and there were no buffering headaches. The “people will never watch broadband video TV” crowd should pay attention…

Yeah, it’s a good idea, but not if you can’t download the player and there’s no help line to ask what’s wrong. I lowered all of my security settings and it still says that the user has stopped the download, when I’ve done nothing. And I really wanted to watch bones.
4. Blithedale | October 4th, 2006 at 8:40 pm
Of course typically it only runs on Windows 98.
No one cares about us Mac-types

Kat, please send me a message. I’d like to understand what is happening on your download and install. email: jericson (at) movenetworks.com. We’ve provided the video technology FIM is using. In the future, we will continue to improve the download in installation process. We are also planning to support Mac users.

I have been “downloading” for 15 minutes and I have dsl!! I still don’t have the player and I have a weird ‘dos’ window up. There is also no ‘help’ or questions about the download. I have Windows 98. People call this quick?
7. Linda Miller | October 5th, 2006 at 4:07 pm
After receiving really prompt replies from Jim Ericson, I tried using my husband’s WindowsXP Laptop and I had no problems getting the player and watching shows. Hope this helps someone else.

For me, I downloaded the player, and it said there was no problem.
The ad shows… and then the “countdown” stops at zero.
So, I can’t watch the show. Why is this?

Kat did you manage to sort your problem with the full throttle player? I’m having the same problem: windows keeps telling me that I have stopped or cancelled the installation: i’ve tried the security settings, firewall etc as well!
17. Samantha | October 12th, 2006 at 7:12 pm

19. Kevin | October 13th, 2006 at 9:37 pm
Same problem as gabriel. There is no help available on the aplication. I had problems installing and had to change my ie settings for prompted downloads from active x and got around that. Now I can hear sound but no video and there’s nowhere I can go to in order to determine if drivers from apps like democracy player mess things up.
20. Erick | October 13th, 2006 at 10:26 pm
Total dud. The player supposedly downloaded. I can’t watch a single episode of a single show. The player just sits there with a black screen. Moving the slider makes no difference.
Fox is shooting blanks. Screw ‘em. I will go to torrents and watch without them.
FEMA must be in charge of their online content.
21. Anna | October 14th, 2006 at 1:28 am
Has anyone else had the problem where you’ve downloaded the fox full throttle player and it then tells you, ” You have the current version of the player installed, but your web browser has loaded an older version (this is common after upgrading). Please completely close all web browser windows and load this page again.” So, I’ve closed my web browser but it still shows this message. Anyone know how to fix??
22. Erich | October 14th, 2006 at 7:21 pm
I get a different message: “Installation timed out. Be sure your Internet connection is working and press the Refresh button in your browser to try again.” The loading indicator dots appear and go all the across the screen and then I get this message every time. Any ideas?
23. Katie | October 15th, 2006 at 1:55 pm
I have been getting the same problems as most of you have experienced, yet have now got to the stage that I have downloaded the viewing installation, yet the adverts keep looping and no episode is available to watch. (Obviously aggrevating)! Has anyone had any luck?
Jim Ericson, could you assit in any way? Could it be a problem that im in the UK and not the US?

Hi. I work at Move Networks. We are helping to provide FOX with video services for their Full Throttle Player. I’ve had the pleasure to correspond with a number of people on this forum. In each case the issue has been that the viewing was taking place from outside the United States.
Currently, the FOX On Demand service is only available to those accessing the service from within the United States. I hope at provides an answer to most of you. If you are not able to view FOX programming from within the US, please let me know.

it’s the Internet. It’s worldwide!!

If people from Canada can not view it, please be kind to also not allow them to view the ads….. It feels really bad that ads show and the TV episodes do not. Feels like being lured to see the ads for nothing.

I really don’t think its fair that people outside America can’t view the shows on myspace. They should put that up on the website. Does anyone know when the shows will be avaliable in Canada?

When I play the video I can hear the sound but there’s no video; someone else had this problem also. It worked just fine up until 1 week ago and now there’s no video. I reinstalled firefox and still no dice. Any ideas of what’s wrong?

40. rachel | October 26th, 2006 at 8:38 am
It would prove worthwhile for those who designed FOX on demand to firstly take out an atlas and note that the US is not the sole country on the planet. After this ground-breaking fact has been realised, it would be courteous if the fox network displayed an “only available in the U.S.” disclaimer when it advertises shows on demand. It would save those who live outside the US a lot of time trying to figure out why the program won’t download.
41. Jennifer | October 26th, 2006 at 10:23 am
URRRGGHHH! I am in the U.S. and I cannot download the player. I have tried everything. I even downloaded firefox 2.0 to see if I could download through that rather than internet explorer. Well it tells me that it has downloaded and then tells me it is not compatible with firefox2.0 only firefox 1.5 or 1.6 which I don’t believe are available any longer. I have no idea what to do now. I have shut off pop up blocker, lowered completely my security settings, it will not download through ie and not compatible with firefox 2.0. HELP?!?!

I am inside the US and I cannot download the player. I keep getting “Installation timed out” messages. Has anyone had this problem and resolved it?
45. Chris | October 27th, 2006 at 9:18 am
Bloody cretins. As FOX are based in the US does that mean I can sue their stupid arses for wasting my valuable time with their misleading website? Can’t you guys basically sue for anything?!!!
46. Nathan | October 27th, 2006 at 10:58 am
Just like all the other Canadians here have been scammed big time. How can they let us watch the adds try to figure it our for days. I would suggest all of us who feel this write emails to the companies who’s adds we had to watch informing them that because of this scam we will not be buying there products. This will have more impact than talking to fox directly.
47. annoyedFan | October 27th, 2006 at 3:06 pm
Why didn’t these guys just got to iTunes like most of the other networks?! You know, technology that works and that people seem to love and embrace?
48. chuck | October 27th, 2006 at 5:05 pm
Player wont download. Another reason to hate fox besides cancelling every good series they get. another thumbs down for fox. myspace is shit also.
49. faye | October 28th, 2006 at 4:18 am
Nicole - you probably need to download the XviD codec or DivX player to view torrents. Should work then.
50. Lisa | October 29th, 2006 at 1:15 am
I am in California. Full Throttle player downloaded fine. Great sound & pictures…until halfway thru each show (Prison Break…Justice) and then just sits there with black screen. SOOO frustrating to watch half an episode, be really into it, then nothing! ABC.com and CBS.com runs without a hitch. This one is terrible!!
51. Lauren | October 29th, 2006 at 11:59 am
i agree with all the other canadians out there - they let us think we will be able to watch it by showing us that stupid ad - but then it doesnt work and u think its ur own computer! u know it would have been a lot easier and less frustrating if they had just said on the website that it is only available to the us…plain and simple….that way every one gets what they want…not really but we would not have gotten excited like that and then put down!
52. Gary | October 29th, 2006 at 3:24 pm

54. Frank | October 30th, 2006 at 1:40 pm
Good to learn FOD is a “US-only” service. I’ve been trying to watch the show for days, but it turns out the reason I’ve been getting nothing but adds is that I’m doing this from France ! Better luck next time …
55. don | October 31st, 2006 at 1:05 am
I live in California and I am having the same trouble as most of you guys or gals. I try to watch prison break and I only get the audio and no visiual besides a black screen. I was able to watch the first two episodes about a week ago and then it just stopped working.
56. Anna | October 31st, 2006 at 7:24 pm
First off I am from New York (rules out the non-US issue). I seemed to have found my way to Fox on Demand via MySpace today and have tried numerous times to install the Fox Full Throttle player and after about 2 minutes of watching little dots go across the screen it says.. “Installation timed out. Be sure your internet connection is working and press the refresh button in your browser to try again.” Every other program available to the naked eye installs perfectly fine on my computer. Then I go to my Windows Task Manager>processes tab because for some reason my windows (XP by the way) was bogging down, and low and behold, everytime I refreshed the page to retry the install it started another install application and opened the notebook for some reason. So after 6 refreshes, I had12 files running in my background. ( 6 _install.exe and 6 notepad.exe)
All in all I thought “Yay, I can catch a show I missed or watch a show I wouldn’t normally watch!” But I am not so lucky. On another page I found system requirements and my desktop goes above and beyond those requirements. I even tried searching the web to find perhaps an EXE file to download and install it that way, no luck.
Any suggestions?
57. Sylvio | October 31st, 2006 at 7:25 pm
What a crock!
After over an hour of a looping burger king commercial about their selling out their buns for a buck I find out that it’s not a popup nor an Internet configuration problem but just that the service is not available outside the US. Fox… if the shows are not available let us Canadians and others out there know instead of infinately looping ads and trying to figure out what is wrong with our config!!!!
From a VERY disapointed fan of Fox shows as Prison Break, 24, Simpsons, etc
Sylvio
58. nam | October 31st, 2006 at 11:01 pm
I’m trying to catch up on prison break. They had all of season 2 so far posted yesterday, but looks like someone forgot to put the rest of the episodes up today after they updated it w/ yesterday’s episode. They only have the 3 latest episodes in the list now. Please fix it so I can watch more BK cm’s.
59. laura | November 3rd, 2006 at 3:05 pm
i downloaded fox full throttle, but when i click on the video, the ad plays and then it wont show the episode!
60. Juulis | November 4th, 2006 at 4:45 am
Talk about bad commercial for the products on the ads..
61. Dan | November 4th, 2006 at 9:06 am
I think theres two separate issues some people are having and they’re mixing them up…
If you live in the States and you can’t watch the video, it is a problem on your end… if you mess around with your comp (assuming you know what your doing) you might be able to get it to work.
If you live outside of the US, don’t even bother, because Fox won’t let you see it anyway….
If they had any intelligence though, maybe they would realize that anyone who they don’t allow to use the streaming likely will just download it illegally… They’re throwing away potential customers/profits, especially Canadian ones, since the companies advertising on the feeds all seem to have large operations in Canada too.

I, too, am having trouble downloading Fox Throttle. I live in California, and assigned the site to the trusted group in Internet Explorer 6. The problem seems to not affect my girlfriend’s computer who is on the same network as I, also using Windows XP. She, however, is using Home edition while I am using Media Center.

I live in the USA and tried to download fox full throttle player which it seemed to do but then all I can do is watch back to back ads and no prison break! Is there something I have to change in my browser to view the show? I am using internet explorer 6. This is so frustrating. I want to try installing the player again, but where does it even go anyway? I can’t use control panel to uninstall because it’s not there and it’s not in the program files or anything. Arggghhhh. Help!
67. Yesenia | November 12th, 2006 at 4:32 am
And even worse than being in Canada and not being able to view the shows… try being in the US Armed Forces stationed overseas… I was really excited to get a rare chance to see REAL American TV… but all I got were the commercials… So I agree with everyone that is disgruntled over this…
68. Maretta | November 16th, 2006 at 11:03 am
I downloaded fox full throttle numerous times and am still having the same problem. If I try to watch the show in full screen, the video stops and starts, but the audio keeps going. I have to watch the shows in the small window. Also once it is downloaded, there is nowhere to go to set the stupid thing up.
69. Brian | November 18th, 2006 at 10:36 pm
This Fox Full Throttle thing is bullshit. Doesn’t even work in Canada. What a fucken joke. All I wanted to do is watch Vanished. FUCK FUCK!!! FUCK FOX THE MOST!!!

74. hobnob | December 9th, 2006 at 5:08 pm
In US (ok, New Jersey - Verizon Online DSL), a well configured PC & Video, which plays every other streaming vid I’ve ever tried. For FOD, just get the “loading” message & an occasional, sporadic 1 second of video & sound - then nothing. IE6 & Firefox 2. Tried with & without firewall, as well as direct DSL modem or through router - no dice. This stinks. Why Move Network, why???
75. quistisix | December 11th, 2006 at 10:51 pm
i try to play the show and i get an error message reading
install has caused an error in install.exe
and then tells me it will close down.
So I try to directly download it and everything is fine and i then get
regdll has caused and error in QSP21E06101001.dll and tells me it will now close.
I have windows me and am completely frustrated. If anyone can help my email is quistisix@yahoo.com……

to Dan; youre an idiot. it is not on my side. i am a developer for a very large software company and it DOESNT work over here in california. look geniuos,,, its NOT on my end. how can it be the users fault??? i mean most people only know how to 1. turn on computer; 2. browse internet/write document/send email. so how do you figure its our end? it shouldnt be. it should be as easy as download, PLAY. thats it. there should be no other issues. i get a greenscreen and it completely maxes out my cpu to where i almost cant move my mouse. THIS is my fault Dan??? you need to stfu and fox needs to get on the ball with this. i get the greenscreen. its getting annoying. its almost been half a year and their shit still isnt working
77. Nilo | February 8th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
I am in Boston right now and I ´ve tried everything possible to get it working. I won´t even get the download message from it, only a black background where the player is supposed to be. As many others I have tried using other borwsers (ie 6 and FF 1.5 and above) with no success.
I even tried going to the “move network” site wich is supposed to be offering this service to Fox with no more luck than I had had to so far. I managed to get the move media player installed (not even sure if it is the same from fox) and the demo works just fine, but it won´t work at all in Fox. I would really like some help here.

i dont know why it works but i solved the green screen problem. just have two myspace.com/fox windows open and the second one will work. you can just leave the first one on the intro page with nothing playing and once you start a video on the second page you can close the first page and enjoy your video. i discovered this completely by accident and i hoped to end everyone elses frustration by sharing

The green screen issue seems to be an overlay problem with nVidia FX 5xxx series video cards and DirectShow Acceleration. I’m willing to bet everyone with green screens have nVidia video cards. I have the green screen issue as well. Happens with Fox and QuickTime streaming videos especially. After a fresh restart, it works. Once. Next time you see it, green. Been like this ever since SP2. It has something to do with SP2, nVidia, and DirectShow. Never been fixed by anyone.

I can see that some have at least “found” where to go to download Fox Move Media Player. Could somebody clue me in as to where to find the site for downloading?
Of course I have a MAC but supposedly MACs are supported.
Watching episodes on ABC is great, no problem, just start watching.
Please help me,
Nick.

ALL I CAN SAY IS GO TO ABC AND WATCH THEIR SHOWS.
Fox totally sucks. The ABC experience is great. All you have to do is select what you want to watch, and then watch.
24 rocks and so does Prison Break, Fox sucks.
I guess the suits still live in the past.

I have some issue with The CW and Fox’s sites when it loads the video it stops 1-2 seconds in and keeps trying to load the page so my screen just keeps flashing trying to load the episode. It’s weird cause I went to the Move media site and their sample footage works fine for me.

97. jackp | July 27th, 2007 at 6:57 pm
Yep…. it worked fine several months ago. I have all the lastest WinXp updates, etc. and it just does not work. Blank screen most of the time, some frames every now and then and I’m on a 5mbps circuit.

FOX and CWTV use to work fine. However, the FOX myspace setup became so obnoxious - I stopped going. CWTV new layout had problems at first. then it worked. and now it’s telling me i’m outside the US. with no other help or explanation. SO WHAT CODE DETERMINES THIS RESULT? I looked up my ip address, just in case I was missing something, and just what I thought , I’M IN THE UNITED STATES! When I decided to check back in with FOX - I got the same lame message. ABC. NBC. CBS. THANK YOU. I KNOW YOU’RE STILL WORKING OUT NEW FORMATS BUT AT LEAST YOU TRY AND AT LEAST YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF HELP OPTIONS.
101. Mike | October 30th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Doesn’t work for Canadians.
No big deal i’ll just pirate then like everyone else.
102. Kopruch | November 14th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Well, the fact that some of those shows are banned in a few place outside US may be an excuse for FOX. Also, the advertisers paid only for US, didn’t they? So why would FOX promote them outside.
Anyway, I can’t believe the problem exists for over an year and NOBODY came up with a way to bypass it. No Russians want to watch FOX shows?
103. Jon | November 20th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
The Internet = International Network.
I noticed that many US websites now ban their content outside the USA. How provincial. Why don’t we reciprocate and build a virtual wall to close THEM off from the the rest of the world? Fox, Mtv, Amazon, itunes, and a whole bunch of others deliberately ban IP addresses outside the US from viewing their content, and there can’t be any commercial considerations because the more people see it around the world, the larger the audience! It’s just stupid mean spirited provincial mentality that we should ban from the internet.
I VOTE WE BAN THE US FROM THE REST OF THE INTERNET. They go against the very ethos of the www community.
(P.S.: I have no wish to have a discussion on who invented the www with ignorant people, thank you - without Tim Berners-Lee, who is British, the internet would still only be a dorky communication device used by Universities and military personnel.)

ARE YOU CANADIANS REALLY THAT STUPID? I am american and living in japan, and even I cant watch them, because im not coming from a US based IP address. I am the only one that has a right to bitch. But, since none of you where smart enough to realize the purpose of blocking you, I will fill you in. TV shows on public broadcasting channels are FREE to watch? WHY ARE THEY FREE TO WATCH? Oh yeah, because they have god damn commericials in them. And are they just any commericial. NO you nimwit, they are hand picked commericials for the given area (IE the US) and even more so, DOWn to teh individual states and cities. So NO they will not let you watch the shows until they have CANADIAN, AFGHANI, BRiSITH based Commericials to throw at your face in between watching shows. Until that happens, just shut up, or move to the US so you can stop complaining. I forgot where it was stated that FOX corporation owes you FREE TV and its required that it delivers. Why dont you turn on that thing inside your head and just think for a second rather than thinking oh yeah america only thinks about itself blah blah blah, you bunch of rejects.
105. Ellie | November 24th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Wow. Is it humanly possible to have that much rage about something so trivial, ‘only one with a brain’??? Calm down. It’s not like someone personally attacked you. And the fact that you are in Japan and think that you deserve it because of your nationality is just as silly.
106. hmmm | November 26th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Someone needs to NOT take this so seriously…
Calm down buddy
107. Ninreznor | November 26th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
if anyone had some initiative you’d set up an American proxy server. im in the uk and am watching kitchen nightmares now.
108. James | December 5th, 2007 at 10:47 am
yeah the USA can suck my balls…
I’ll make those corporate fat cats a deal… Stop being assholes and discriminating against the world and I’ll stop downloading tv shows off bit torrent….
pffft you know what screw their on demand crap… they don’t want to show it to Canadians FINE…
I’ll just download the show with bit torrent - no commercials and better quality that way anyways…
Frigging assholes.
109. Liey | January 18th, 2008 at 6:51 am
Wow, thanks for the excellent information!
110. Mare | February 4th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
The reason why you can’t watch in Canada is because of the CRTC censorship regime! They want control over what Canadians watch…yes we have FOX channel in Canada but you might have noticed that we never watch US commercials…there is always a Canadian Network affiliated that shows us ‘Canadian Content’. So bottom line…don’t complain to FOX, complain to the CRTC.
