NAB boss: ‘Why doesn’t cable have indecency rules?’

Once again, rather than fighting the heavy-handed indecency regulations that stifle the broadcast industry, the NAB is using the “But they’re doing it too!” strategy. NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr told reporters Wednesday “Why is it that cable doesn’t have indecency rules? Because the courts say they are a subscription service… but I know in my area and maybe in your area, cable uses free marketing and free subscriptions as a way to gain customers.” Mr. Rehr: It’s not that cable occasionally offers freebies. It’s that cable is a subscription service people choose that does not use public airwaves. Fight the FCC, don’t ask them for more regulations.

Stick this in your PC and record HDTV

The Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick plugs in to your USB port and can record HDTV right on to your hard drive. It’s about the size of a USB WiFi adapter. For $129, it beats the heck out of a $800 TiVo Series 3, and also claims to save directly to DVD, iPod or Sony PSP formats. And if you’re fortunate enough to live in an area with a decent signal, you can even grab it free over-the-air. I have not tried the product, but when it’s available for the Mac (which the company says is coming) I sure will.

Listening to newspapers: like reading TV

The Washington Times has partnered with Newsworthy which has developed technology that lets you listen to an article online. (Seems to me this has been done before.) The headlines says “Don’t have time to read the news? Listen instead!” Don’t know about you - but it would take me a lot longer to listen to an article than to read one. Paidcontent calls the addition “shovelware” and finds it of little use, except perhaps for the sight-impaired. Agreed.

Using technology to fake sick

Ah, sick days. Or, I should write “sick days.” The biggest problem with calling in sick is the strategy of how to sound on the phone. Do you cough? Too obvious. Have your spouse/significant other make the call? Lame. CNet points us to Call In Sick, a free service that lets you record a sick call before you go to bed and then makes the call to your boss’s line at, say, 5 a.m. Awkwardness avoided, and you can even stay in bed. Please Note: Lost Remote in no way encourages the dishonest practice of using a company-paid sick day if you are not sick, unless there is a 1 p.m. playoff game.

You want irony? I’ll give you irony.

A real case of irony: I needed to install a backup drive for my laptop. Too much valuable information. Needed backup badly. Installed the software disc for the drive. Crash. What’s worse is that the disc is stuck in the drive, so I can’t even boot into the OS from the system disc. That, Alanis, is the true meaning of irony.

Report: ABCNews.com revealed Foley accuser ID

Drudge is splashing the story that ABCNews.com briefly revealed the screen name of Rep. Mark Foley’s accuser in an instant messaging exchange. According to Drudge, ABCNews.com responded in a statement, “We go to great lengths to prevent the names of alleged sex crime victims from being revealed. On Friday there was a very brief technical glitch on our site which was overridden immediately. It is possible that during that very brief interval a screen name could have been captured. Reviews of the site since then show no unredacted screen names.”
