Youtube is just going down the shitters really. The days of having freedom to show what you wanted are now at an end. Just wait... if you do a spoof of something with a copyright I'm sure the company that owns the original will sue since it's an infringment... where exactly does this shit end?

Youtube will die and someone will come up with a better solution!

Sad but true :P

[...] Click on many of the links to Comedy Central clips on YouTube and you’ll get the message, “This video has been removed by the user.” (Do a search and you’ll still find quite a few, at least for now.) NewsCloud reports that YouTube says it’s been asked by a “third party” under terms of the DMCA to remove clips of the Colbert Report and the Daily Show. Both shows haven’t had an issue with YouTube, well, at least before the Google acquisition. In fact, the Colbert Report has used YouTube in its green screen challenge. And Stephen Colbert has mentioned the site so many times on the air, he recently joked that he was owed $700 million in licensing fees. YouTube has been thriving with Comedy Central content — probably the most widespread TV brand on the site — so this will be the most noticeable content removal to date. And it’s interesting to point out that Comedy Central — a Viacom unit — is not going along with CBS’ strategy of forming a strategic partnership with YouTube.
[...] First, Universal Music threatened to sue YouTube. Then, Universal teamed up with YouTube. Now, a week later, Universal sues Grouper and Bolt for allowing users to upload and share music videos. The lawsuit asks for as much as $150,000 for each incident of copyright infringement. “The lawsuit is without merit and we expect to prevail,” Josh Felser, co-founder and CEO of Grouper said. “Our website is protected by federal law and we’re vigilant about taking down copyrighted content when we’re properly notified.” This is a key lawsuit to watch, as it challenges the notion of DMCA’s safe harbor clause, which protects online service providers that promptly remove copyrighted content when asked.
I'm interested to see where this deal goes, given Moonves' almost complete lack of understanding of nextgen technologies, distribution, and demographic differences in media consumption. In a recent interview on Charlie Rose, he said he couldn't predict media trends and barely understood the (ahem) "new" technologies like Podcasting. Hello? Rock? Living under?

RE: Anonymous comment on "going legit: Whether through this CBS partnership or rumored Google buyout, I do agree that tht Wild West days are over. A shame, really. Half the fun of YouTube is its laissez-faire-ness: "let do, let go, let pass."
