I'm not sure if you know already, but if you burn the DRM encrypted files to an audio CD and rip them back into iTunes, the protection is gone. Then, you can back up the original purchased (encrypted) files separately if you want to (Make sure you don't replace them before you back them up though). It's a bit of a hassle, but that's what I do. LOL @ stealing music from yourself.
