CBS Evening News ‘not different enough’

Cory Bergman October 12th, 2006

The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric is now third place in the ratings. “Although she is doing a fine job, her presentation and the CBS Evening News in general is not different enough, young enough, radical enough a departure from the show before Couric to change American viewing habits,” says Paul Levinson, professor and chair of the communication and media studies department at Fordham University. Thoughts…?

Katie Couric? Did they really think she was going to be “edgy” or bring in the younger crowd? If they did somebody should be getting fired pretty soon. Now, personally I think CBS does a fine job but I dont really like Katie Couric or how she presents the evening news, but thats just my opinion.

They’ve taken the “Katie” out of Katie. They’ve turned her into an old, white anchor guy. She’s good at interviewing. Lose the readers. Let her be herself. And now my superficial comment (and I know the ladies will agree) . . . .can’t she where something besides black, white or cream?

CBS should swallow hard, buy out Katie’s contract, and offer Bob Schieffer anything he wants to come back. I can’t take it anymore!

Why oh why does the News have to be “young enough” and “radical enough”??

Perhaps it’s a zero-sum type of game: only so many people each generation wake up and realize (for ANY news media) “hey, you know what? Maybe I ought to pay attention!” Therefore the total audience for evening / dinner time news is fixed and divided along personal preference lines.

Let’s also not forget: many in the precious “too young to be wise about spending their bucks” demographic usually have to work after classes and often that work is at restaurants or retail where the shifts start before dinner time - therefore removing them from the potential viewer ranks.

Get a clue… Young people don’t care about news enough to stop what they’re doing at 6:30 and watch a particular show.

Right now, CBS isn’t doing a good job at changing things around. Remember David Lee Roth trying to replace Howard Stern? (Although, they seem to be doing a good job with O&A).

CBS needs to completely revamp their presentation using the Video Journalist concept that I brought to the BBC and others. It’s a new paradigm and will be the savior of television news.

If CBS or any other news entity thinks that the fortunes of their program rise or fall for the most part based upon who they put in the anchor chair, then they will trail the field forever. It’s all about content and capitalizing on the strengths of the anchors and reporters to communicate that content in the most effective way.
Until CBS puts on a better program, night after night than the others, they’ll be third.

how about offering a different product than the others?

when there are 3 shades of the grey playing at the same time it’s going to be tough getting folks to switch.

Katie Couric is uncomfortable with the teleprompter; she is great when talking to somone; very stiff when talking to a machine, and the “chatty” approach doesn’t work when it’s just towards an unseen audience….it’s a shame to lose the warmth of her personality

Katie hasn’t found her comfort zone yet. She has been warned, perky is unseemly for broadcast news so she was tossed to the lions before she began. Let her find herself and take the literal weight off her shoulders. A number one newscast cannot be built in a New York Minute. Why is everyone in such a hurry?
I do like the new features on the show. The show does have the Free Speech and other new pieces. Therefore the show is innovative and working to become a good newscast.

    Must be a New

i have to agree with dave in that young people are not who the news is aimed at. boomers and older are probably the largest or only news viewing audience left for the old tv news ritual. what does some professor (paul levinson) know about tv viewers anyway. speaking for the 50 something females we like seeing old katie where she is and she is doing a fine job. like pat suggest if they let her be more herself she could even do a better job.
