Study: 14% of Americans have internet addiction

A study by the Stanford University of Medicine finds it’s no coincidence “webhead” shares the same suffix as “crackhead.” “Nearly 14% of those surveyed say they find it difficult to remain away from the Web for days at a time… Almost 9 percent have at some point tried to hide their surfing habits from family, friends or others… (And) Just under 6 percent said personal relationships were hampered by their excessive Web surfing.” Not me. I like spending Saturday nights online. I can quit any time I want.

Well, all depends what the reasons are for not being able to stay away from the computer. A TV show I’m being interviewed for talked about forbidding me computer access for 24 hours — no problem.
So they started talking about a week. That would make things more complicated, because I use the computer as a tool a lot. Think “a week without my car” — a lot of things need to be organised differently. But worst, I need my computer professionnally.
So, am I addicted?

Stephanies says about what I was going to say … The computer is my most important professional tool, and it is how I stay connected to a large network of colleagues, friends and family. Very little of what I do on the computer could be considered trivial, and that is seldom.
I’m online (laptop and treo) for all practical purposes 7/24 … so am I an addict, or is that just the way life is (and, btw, I think I live a pretty full and active life apart from the connectedness, too — lots of outside interest, friends and family).

Last weekend the Internet went out for about 48 hours in my house, resulting in stress and causing a fight with the roommate about taking turns waiting for the Comcast guy to come. Are those signs of addiction?

I think talks about online addiction need to look into “being online” in a more granular way. What uses? What online tools? For what purpose?
Am I addicted to the pub if I spend all my evenings there? Am I addicted to my car because I use it everyday?
The TV people asked me what criteria I would use to define “internet addiction”. I’m no psychologist, but I don’t think it is easy to come up with a list of objective criteria for it. It all depends what role use of the internet plays for the person in question.
There is one criteria, though, which I think is sufficient but not necessary: when somebody starts lying about how much they use the internet, then it would be an indicator that at some level, they know their usage of this tool is problematic.
