‘Studio 60′ losing its luster
Cory Bergman October 24th, 2006
I watched the first two episodes of NBC’s big fall show, Studio 60, but the rest are stacking up unwatched on my DVR. And now the critics are starting to doubt its future success, but CBS MarketWatch’s Frank Barnako is trying to stay with it. “One reason I’ve been rooting for the show is that NBC really was aggressive using new media to promote the show and build buzz,” he writes. “But the dog isn’t hunting on TV or online.”

I was just thinking something similar as your headline as I watched Monday’s episode on our DVR tonight. The show had great promise but the plot points and dialogue are not believeable. I’ll give it one more episode and if it’s not better, I’ll unsubscribe on the DVR.

It’s easier to get away with moralizing about politics, governing, and what may be deemed worldly and important topics (ex: West Wing touched onmany serious topics - genocide, famine, global warming, reproductive rights, etc…) than it is to do that same kind of sermonizing about making a live TV show.
That being said, I am enjoying Studio 60, especially when they poke fun at NBC. It’s no West Wing, to which it will obviously be compared with in the minds of the viewers (most of whom were probably WW fans). Perhaps Aaron Sorkin should’ve waited a year or so, allowing for some distance between shows.

I waited for the debut with great anticipation and had high hopes for the show but a few flashes of brilliance do not an hour make. I’m ready to take it out of my Season Pass list and that makes me very unhappy.

The thing is, with all the great writing and production values, I’m afraid it’s too “inside”. I love the show.
It is so true to life it’s amazing. But most people
won’t know that. It will not survive, but I will watch
and savor every episode until it goes away because
this is good, creative story writing and fantastic
production. The thing that’s interesting to me is
the comments above that seem to think there is even
a small hope that television episode production values
will ever be this good again, and thinking this
isn’t good enough for them.
This last week’s show, where we saw a writer from the
blacklisted era, Eli Wallach no less.
Could you guys above ever write something that good
or cast it so well?
Easy to criticize, not so easy to produce.

I agree that it’s “too inside.” There are some things that I find amusing becasue I used to work for NBC (same goes for 30 Rock).

[...] Frank Barnako writes that the critics are predicting the death of NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and the DVR at Lost Remote has unwatched episodes of Studio 60 on it, but I’m hoping NBC doesn’t cancel the show too soon. [...]
