My “I am a focus group of one” reaction? I want every gadget out there. I’m a gadget freak. And there’s nothing inside me screaming “get this thing now!” It’s fine. It will get a piece of the pie. But it’s no iPod killer or even iPod-major-wounder.

Nothing against the Zune, but why does MS feel the need to own or control every inch of the computer industry?

I am for the Zune, maybe the Apple / iPod buzz will fizzle but I am just not for the crazy high price of its accessories.

By the same token, why does *Apple* feel it has to own or control every inch of the online music industry? I kinda feel bad for M$’s PlaysForSure partners, but Microsoft has found out (a little too late) that their operating system business model just doesn’t translate to the portable music player market. The genius of iPod/iTunes is that there’s a single vendor for player and music store. Microsoft is getting closer to emulating Apple in that regard.

Thats BS, the Ipod having a single vendor for music store is wack. Microsoft providing many vendors allows for competition between vendors and more opportunities for users to get a better deal. The Playsforsure concept has nothing to do with itunes and is no way a emulation of itunes. It is a concept that allows vendors of digital files & manufacturers of digital file playing devices to guarantee compatibility. Which would make Microsoft a certification medium between vender and user, rather then a supplier. Itunes is strictly a supplier.

Windows Media Player has always been better then Quicktime. I don’t see any reason why the operating system business model of microsoft doesn’t translate into the music market, that doesn’t make any sense. Most of the late 90s / early 2000 file sharers were done on windows 2000 machines, not apple.

If the world was fair then creative would dominate the
digital file player industry. They are the true masters of hardware for computer sound and always have been. And Napster would dominate the digital file industry. They are who apple emulated. And microsoft & apple should only be responsible for making the software to work with the os.

Apple and Microsoft are always competing because both companies suck at doing anything that doesn’t have to do with stealing concepts. Thats the foundation of both companies.
