Amanda Congdon signs with HBO

Former Rocketboom host Amanda Congdon has inked a deal with HBO to develop and star in a comedy show. Details are still sketchy, but Congdon says it will be integrated with video online. “HBO is exactly the place where I want to be,” she said. “I’m most interested in playing in that new dimension with two parallel levels of programming, online and on TV.” After she left Rocketboom (of which she is still a part owner), Congdon has been focused on her Amanda Across America video blog while evaluating options from various media companies.

Brands creating own broadband TV, going around you

We have pointed to this trend before, but it’s worth repeating: advertisers are going around TV networks and stations by creating their own video content and putting it online. Bud.TV (and its seven channels) is just the first example. Broadband TV will take off, and advertisers will realize it is a much more cost effective way to get their message out. Snickers has created Instant Def, an online series that already has had one million views of its five episodes. Watch, and then ask yourself: if you were the advertiser, would you spend your ad bucks on millions of views on your own broadband channel, or on a TV ad people are going to skip?

SMWest 2006 Video: The Business of Online Advertising

Streaming Media has now put up video from Streaming Media West. Here is one of the panels I was flatteringly asked to pontificate on, The Business of Online Video Advertising. The panel was hosted by LR Pal Jeff Marcus of 24/7 Real Media, and featured Jeremy Lockhorn, Emerging Video Platforms, Avenue A / Razorfish, Jim Smith, Chief Of Publisher Services, Advertising.com, Matt Nessier, Associate Media Director, Universal McCann, and - shamlessly as always - me.

Update on Disney’s digital efforts

Disney announced it doubled its fourth quarter profit, thanks to a strong box office showing and success at its theme parks. Key digital details:

  • ABC.com has served up 19 million show streaming requests in the last six weeks.
  • ABC has sold 12 million show downloads on iTunes since October, 2005.
  • Since June, 53 million shows have been played on DisneyChannel.com.
  • Disney.com will undergo a major relaunch next year with “extremely robust features in shopping, television, movies, travel, music, social networking, and community.”
  • Disney is “weeks away” from a deal with Comcast which may include Disney movies and TV shows available on video on demand.

Lots more in the transcript of the earnings call. (Via PaidContent)

  • Google Video hit with a lawsuit

In documents filed with the SEC, Google says it’s been sued for copyright infringement over Google Video. The documents don’t give any details, but there’s this key paragraph: “In addition, our planned acquisition of YouTube may also subject us to additional copyright claims upon the closing of the transaction. Adverse results in these lawsuits may include awards of damages and may also result in, or even compel, a change in our business practices, which could result in a loss of revenue for us or otherwise harm our business.” Google is also facing lawsuits in Google News, Google Book Search and Google Image Search.

Friday Funny: Watch a baby laugh

It’s the most-watched video on YouTube this past month. A laughing baby. More than three million views. Why? Watch. It’s contagious - I dare you not to laugh along. And after a long week of elections and politics, I think we all need a little baby laughter in our lives.

‘48 Hours’ ties in with… ‘CSI’?

We’re used to those horrible local news tie-ins during sweeps that stretch credibility (”Coming up… small bikinis at your beach… could it happen here? An Investigative Team Special Report!). Well, here’s a new sweeps twist. The CBS news-ish show 48 Hours is doing a show about a serial killer, and then CBS’s CSI: Miami will incorporate the same killer into its storyline. Clips from CSI will be on the 48 Hours episode.
